Dear Barnard College Community:

We recently became aware of an incident that occurred on Friday morning, March 11, 2011, at approximately 03:30 A.M., in which a Barnard College student was the victim of a sexual offense at West 112 Street and Broadway. The student was walking northbound on the east side of Broadway when an intoxicated male grabbed her arm and fondled her.  The student resisted, by kicking the male in the groin area and breaking free; she then returned to campus. NYPD has been notified of this incident and will take appropriate action.

When traveling during late hours please remember that the Barnard shuttle service is available from 9:00pm-4:00am by calling 212-854-3362. In addition, the Columbia University shuttle service is also available on a regular schedule, and after 10:00pm mobile service is available by calling 854-SAFE between 11:00pm and 2:00am.

One of the most important things we can all do to ensure our own personal safety is to be aware of our surroundings. When possible travel with friends during late night hours, avoid being distracted by headphones or cell phones while walking, and be aware of “Safe Haven” locations should you encounter a suspicious person.

“Be aware and be safe.”
