Low on high.

Bacchanal weekend got off to a bad start for many Lions teams. Yale snapped the Men’s Tennis team’s 12 game winning streak and handed the squad their first Ivy League loss. The Bulldogs similarly got the better of the Women’s Tennis team, while Cornell swept Baseball and Softball in Saturday’s doubleheader. The Lions, however, bounced back to tally some big (gigantic) wins later in the weekend, including two victories over Dartmouth from the tennis teams, a win against Big Red Softball, and a second place finish in the 6th Annual Roar-EE Women’s Golf Invitational.

In the singles, Yale quickly drew the score even with a win in the No. 4 spot. Though Lin followed with a two-set victory in the No. 2 singles, the Bulldogs went on to take the No. 1 and No. 5 matches to pull ahead of the Lions. Columbia, however, would not go down without a fight, as sophomore Tizian Bucher battled back from a set down to win the No. singles, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4. St. John’s responded with four runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead, and the Lions brought in freshman George Thanopoulos to relieve Columbia’s starter. The Lions rallied in the fifth when senior Alex Aurrichio hit a single into right center to plate Ferraresi, and then stole second to allow Black to run home off the catcher’s throw. The Lions caught fire two innings later, scoring five runs to put Columbia up by five. St. John’s attempted to mount a comeback in the eighth, but fell short, handing the Lions a 9-6 victory.

The Lions headed up to Cornell this weekend to play two doubleheaders against the Big Red. In Game 1 on Saturday, Columbia got on the board first in the third inning, when Ferarresi and junior Dario Pizzano executed a double steal to put the Lions up, 1-0. Both teams were quiet on offense for much of the game due to strong pitching from Columbia starter Pat Lowery, who allowed only two hits in six innings, and his Big Red counterpart. Cornell finally got on the board in the seventh with an RBI double to tie the game, and added another run in the eighth off a sacrifice fly to take the game, 2-1, over the Lions. In game two, the Lions struggled to get out of a bind in the first inning after allowing a single and double from Cornell’s first two batters. The Big Red were able to capitalize, scoring three runs in the opening inning. Cornell starter McAfee didn’t allow the Lions to gain any offensive momentum, setting down 11 of the first 12 Columbia batters. Junior Tim Geil settled down after the first inning, allowing just one base hit in remaining seven innings in his first career complete game, but the Lions were unable to recover from the early deficit.

The Lions fell again to the Big Red on Sunday in game one, 5-6.

Junior Allison Lam drew a walk followed by an RBI double from sophomore Morgan Cook to plate Lam. The Cornell starter walked three more batters, handing the Lions their second run of the game. The Big Red answered with a run in the bottom of the second, but the Lions continued their offensive pressure as sophomore Tristan Moone cranked a solo home run over the wall in center field to put Columbia up 3-1. Cornell, however, found their groove in the third inning, tallying seven runs to take the lead from the Lions. Columbia mounted a comeback in the fourth, scoring two runs to cut the lead to three and picked up another run in the sixth after Cook slammed an RBI double to left center. Taylor added to the effort with a solo home run in the seventh, but the Lions were unable to close the game, falling 7-9. In game two, Cornell got their offense going early, scoring five runs in the first frame to take control of the game. The Lions didn’t get on the board until the third inning, when freshman Alix Cook drove in Lam with an RBI groundout to make it a 6-1 game. The Big Red added three more runs in the bottom of the third to generate an insurmountable lead.
