New York City is packed with amazing culture and inspiring art, but sometimes it’s difficult to break the Morningside-bubble and experience it all first-hand. “Where Art Thou” is a weekly guide to interesting and notable lectures, events, and performances for the literary/musically/ theatrically-inclined on campus.

Saturday, April 23

  • CUFP Film Festival, 7 PM, Glicker-Milstein Theatre in the Diana Center – “The CUFP Film Festival is held every year in April by Columbia Undergraduate Film Productions, a campus organization dedicated to student film pursuits. The festival showcases exemplary student work.”

Wednesday, April 27

  • Mid-Day Music featuring Harvey Wu and Yong Murray, 12:00 PM, Garden Room at the Faculty House – Pianists Harvey Wu and Yong Murray will be performing as part of the Mid-Day Music recital series. Program includes Debussy, Gershwin/Wild, Chopin, and Brahms.
  • A Reading and Conversation by Bernadette Mayer, 7:00 PM, Room 501 in Dodge Hall – “Bernadette Mayer will be reading from her newly released Sonnets (Tender Buttons Press, 2015), followed by a Q&A with Dorothea Lasky.”
  • Hogaku & Gogaku Spring 2016 Concert, 7:30 PM, St. Paul’s Chapel – “The Japanese Gagaku/Hogaku Program, a unique offering at Columbia, is a joint initiative of the Department of Music, the Music Performance Program, the Center for Ethnomusicology, and the Institute for Medieval Japanese Studies at Columbia University.”

Thursday, April 28

  • Advanced Printmaking Exhibition, 4:00 PM, The LeRoy Neiman Gallery in Dodge Hall – “A one-afternoon only exhibition featuring work created in the Advanced Printmaking Class taught by Valerie Hammond, Kiki Smith and Sarah Sze.”
  • & swan song, 7:00 PM, Glicker-Milstein Theatre in the Diana Center – “”& swan song” is a dance piece composed of five dancers who take a magnified look at the performance of violence and death as juxtaposed next to that of tenderness and intimacy.” (Tickets $5 with CUID; additional performances on April 29th and April 30th at the same time)
  • KCST Presents: Macbeth, 8:00 PM, Low Plaza – “King’s Crown Shakespeare Troupe is excited to present its 2016 Spring Show Production, Macbeth! Macbeth is an OUTDOOR show that will travel around campus and use Columbia as its stage!” (Tickets are free; additional performances on April 29th and April 30th, at midnight and 8 PM respectively)
  • Onyx Spring Showcase, 8:30 PM, Lerner Black Box Theatre – “Come to their Annual Spring Showcase to see Onyx groove, bump, grind, and much, much more! Guest performances will be by Raw Elementz, Voltage, and Sharp.” (Tickets $5 with CUID; additional performance on April 29th at the same time)

Friday, April 29

  • Film Fridays – “CAMERAPERSON”, 6:00 PM, Lecture Hall in Pulitzer Hall – “Drawing on footage she’s shot over the course of 25 years, documentary cinematographer Kirsten Johnson searches to reconcile her part in the thorny questions of permission, power, creative ambition, and human obligation that come with filming the lives of others. “
  • The 122nd Annual Varsity Show, 8:00 PM, Roone Arledge Auditorium – Beginning in 1894, The Varsity Show is an annual, unique production that satirizes many of the elements that make up life at Columbia. And honestly, if you haven’t heard of The Varsity Show by now, you’ve probably been living under a rock. (Ticket prices vary; additional performances on April 30th at 8:00PM, and May 1st at 2:00 PM and 8:00 PM)
