After two years with an interim dean, PrezBo announced five months ago that SEAS has a new dean. Feni set up shop in Mudd this summer and to welcome him, ESC is hosting a picnic party on the plaza in front of Pupin from 4 to 6 this afternoon.
This evening, when the indigestion from all the free food has worn off, head over to the Lerner ramps for some free, mysterious “jelly snacks.” Based on the poster, the only other way to describe them would be “those little weird jelly-filled cups you can get at M2M.” AAA will be hosting this study break from 9-10 because, you know, you really need to relax after such a tough week.
While many of us have only been back on campus for 24 hours or so, the Asian American Alliance (AAA) and Club Zamana have separately decided the time is already ripe for a study break.
Beleaguered masses, rise from your work spaces and head to the West Ramp Lounge at 7 for the Tamasha Hype study break, featuring free ice cream and T-shirts. Then, stick around for AAA’s study break at the ramp tables from 10-10:30 for free mochi and green tea. The AAA-ers will also be discussing their new “Sex Ed” documentary and are looking for folks willing to be interviewed. Bwog will stick with the mochi for now, thanks.
Now that midterms are over (for some of us!), penny-savers should be quick to hit up two wonderfully delicious free food events today, which include a joint birthday party for the Office of Multicultural Affairs and the Intercultural Resource Center and a Teahouse with the Asian American Alliance featuring musical guest Alice Hu (and samosas, mango lassi, and tea).
We’re not sure what’s more strange about the AAA poster: that they promote their event with a picture of Calvin Sun et al., or that they’re touting Tokyo Pop as “Columbia’s premier nightclub/lounge.”
Also, Phi Iota Alpha felt the need to promote their rager with a glistening, curvaceous babe.
No party in the Lerner Party space is going to be that hot, guys.
A big Bwog welcome to the Blaaag (rhymes with gag, and not to be confused with Blaaaaahg), which we stumbled upon a few weeks ago before it officially launched on Tuesday. The Blaaag staff wants you to know that although it is specific to Asian American stuff, it is not the voice of the Asian American community, that it’s not Calvin Sun’s mouthpiece, and that it doesn’t gossip. Ever.
As Columbia student groups discover technology, we give you the best of their efforts.
It’s a whole new world for the Dems, reenergized after their elections last month. According to new president Josh Lipsky, next year the group will be putting on three to five events per week, as well as creating dozens of new “umbrella groups” on issues from gay marriage to civil liberties. As part of its hip new image, the new administration has put together a promotional video for its arm wrestling contest next Thursday, featuring the other President Flaxman rocking a tight superhero shirt. “If we, as activists, have to act ridiculous to get people to care about Iraq, then that’s what we’ll do,” declares Elvis-costumed Public Affairs director Jonathan Backer.
Um, good luck kids.
On a more serious note, Asian American Alliance’s incoming president Calvin Sun (who’s going to be busy next year–he’s also Michelle Diamond’s replacement as CC ’08′s Vice President) alerted us to two short videos he directed on eating disorders among Asian Americans. With quickly cut together interviews of AAA members, they’re an interesting window on body image problems specific to that group, although the abstract photomontage at the end was a bit much. Part one here, part two here.
