Commiseration Is Cool

Finals approach. This means you’ll be staying up later. You (hopefully) know both these things. So does Columbia, apparently. With this in mind, here are just a few place which have extended their hours for heavily sighing, red-eyed scholars. Mention any we missed in the comments.

  • HamDel will be open 24/7, instead of the regular 24/6
  • Business and Econ library open ’til midnight
  • Butler Reserves open ’til midnight
  • Butler Media Center open ’til midnight
  • Lehman is open until 4 am

Frugal Finals Food

Today is the last day of classes, finals are coming up very soon, and you know what this means: the time you have to enjoy the luxury of food will be dwindling due to studying. In these trying times, while most may turn to simple choices such as instant noodles or macaroni and cheese, we know that there are creative (see: desperate) chefs out there with… alternative solutions.

So Bwog wants to know: What do you do in these difficult times? Share your best and worst final foods recipes or stories! We’re looking for quick items cramming students can prepare, ideally without having to close a textbook, and that are vaguely “wholesome,” in the most liberal sense of the word. You can share them in the comments or email them to us at tips@bwog.net, preferably with pictures. Look for a roundup towards the end of the week!

To get us started, Lecture Hop Editor Mark Hay guides us through one of his crudest concoctions, pictured to the right and detailed after the jump.

School’s Out, But Professors Are Still Studying

During summer, students may be slaving away at an unpaid resume bullet point internship, scrambling to find something after said internship failed to materialize, or lounging around on the couch (lucky…). Professors and fortunate grad students, though, are still releasing their reports in hopes of gaining a tiny bit of recognition from a conference, providing a useful link for future users of JSTOR, or building their resume to get a better job/their precious tenure. Mostly the last one. And while the newswires are mostly dead in the middle of July, most of Columbia’s headlines are coming from these projects.

  • Sleeping light? According to Medical Center researchers, that makes you more likely to be fat.
  • Researchers find that a coronary calcium scan might cause cancer in itself.
  • Thought art history majors would be left out? Of course not:  a sociology doctoral student claims French modernists who bloomed later were also productive for longer.
  • There’s no conclusion yet, but Columbia is partnering with the University of Michigan and Harvard (among others) to study suicide and mental health in the military.
  • This last study is more than a month old, but there’s no time like the present for the obvious: abstinence-only education will stop contraceptives, but kids’ll keep on having sex.

Now go outside and feel enlightened!

Technology Makes Free Beer Possible

Free food is nice. But during the last week of classes, free alcohol can seem more appropriate.

Village Pourhouse to the rescue! This week the Amsterdam eatery will be sending out coupons for one free Bud Light. Here’s the twist – it’s via text message. An electronic coupon! How did we ever get trashed without technology? Have fun trying to redeem the thing by waving your tiny LCD screen around a crowded bar.

According to our tipster, you text “getcoupons pourhouse” to 41411 to receive a coupon. It’s unclear if they still send you the text if you space the words properly, so copy-edit at your own risk.

In related boozy news, the mysterious Haakon’s Hall,  purveyor of comfort food and fount of free wi-fi, has put up a sign announcing its grand opening next Tuesday. This is the place with the communal table and eggs all day long. Sure, they were still putting up Craigslist ads for pantry cooks as little as one week ago, but did you read them? All about the rotisserie flair and the cobblers? This has the potential to be excellent. And the restaurant has already promised to stay open twenty-four hours a day during finals. So throw caution to the wind and embrace the midnight meatloaf.
