Bwog’s resident blue note enthusiast Briana Last reports from Thursday’s talk.

It was hard finding a seat in Room 622, Dodge Hall Thursday night at 8 PM. In fact, more than a dozen people stood outside the door for two hours, peering their heads in to listen to the raspy impersonation of Miles Davis that Quincy Troupe put on so expertly. Troupe’s shoulder-length braids, ornate scarf, and sleekly polished dress shoes are just indications of the flair he resonates in both his own personal life and the manner in which he tells a story.

Quincy Troupe is the perfect man to host a lecture called “Kind of Blue to Bitches Brew,” an analytical survey of Miles Davis’s musical reinventions and aspirations during and between the release of those two albums (1958-1970). Troupe, a St. Louis native born “right across the river” from where Davis grew up in East St. Louis, was one of Davis’s closest friends. Quincy Troupe attributes this to the fact that he wasn’t afraid to let Davis know when he was acting out of hand: “He knew not to threaten me because I would have whooped him.” Whenever Davis tried his sass, he would reply, “Imma aim for your lip and break your embouchure.” Miles’s only response: “Shiiiiit.” Famous for writing the memoirs of their friendship in a book called Miles and Me, Troupe established a relationship with Davis that was envied by writers who knew him to be a very private person, wary of critics who wanted to dissect and categorize his work. According to Troupe, “Miles hated the term ‘jazz.’ He said he was simply playing music.”

Troupe proceeded to dedicate his lecture to the two seminal albums of Davis’s career. The first, Kind of Blue was a foray into uncharted territory: modal music. With his dynamic quintet of renowned musicians in their own right, Davis played with various improvisation techniques that were revolutionary at that point in musical history. According to Troupe, “Miles used to say he wasn’t ahead of his time. No one could be ahead of their time, but he was on time.” This experimentation and reinvention of sound came to Davis as the political stage in America was changing. At at time when John Kennedy was running for president and African-Americans were fighting for civil rights, the musician began discovering different genres, such as Guinean African music.

In the eyes of Troupe, the years following Kind of Blue were Miles’s most successful. A new quintet formed, and accompanying it, a feeling a restlessness with the modal way of playing. Davis began to sit back and learn from this new set of players. The musician once said, “You got the right group playing the right thing at the right time and you got a motherfucker.” As he liked to put it, “Rhythm is like breathing and that’s what I began to learn to learn from this group.”

This new group of players— among them Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, and John McLaughlin, shaped the music that was recorded on Bitches Brew, where Miles found himself wanting “less abstraction and more funk.” At the time, Davis reinvented the way he dressed, secretly funded The Black Panthers, and was introduced to Jimi Hendrix by his wife Betty Mabry, who was familiar with the music of the rock n’roll because of their secret love affair. This new album was filled with shorter riffs, trumpets imitating the sounds of the electric guitar, and novel concepts of recording— like keeping the track running as to not stop the flow of music. This also caused a host of critics to assault Davis’s new style, but that didn’t stop him from continuing the search for different ways to express himself.

As Quincy Troupe’s lecture came to a close, he reminded the audience that Davis never stopped trying to reinvent the art form. He was unyielding in his risk taking and ever excited to try new things. As Troupe remarked, “Miles didn’t run out of music, he just ran out of time.”

Ah, spring. The chirping of the birds, the smell of the flowers…they’re all fine and dandy. But for fans of alternative music in the Columbia community, spring brings another joy—the WBAR-B-Q. The annual festival has brought the likes of Vampire Weekend, Gang Gang Dance, Japanther and countless more to Lehman Lawn – often way before they break through to the mainstream.

This year saw an expansion of the program, with the introduction of an after-hours, dancier set in the Diana Event Oval and a whopping 10-band lineup including critical darlings Real Estate and psychedelic baroque pop up-and-comer Julianna Barwick. After last year’s unfortunate rained-out affair—which had to be moved to the less-than-awesome Lefrak Gym – it was nice to be back out on Lehman Lawn in the sunshine—even if the weather was a little on the chilly side.

The afternoon portion of the program hit the ground running with a great mix of psych-pop and surf-rock acts. Columbia grad-student collective Beige and hot local band Big Troubles repped the lo-fi camp terrifically with plenty of drum loops, reverberated vocals and bare-bones instrumentals a la Pavement. Grooms, too, was a real treat, though unfortunate mic issues prevented vocalist Emily Ambruso’s voice from coming through—a damn shame, because her vocals are a key part of the Brooklyn trio’s jangly, Silversun Pickups-meets-Sonic Youth sound.

The afternoon’s best moments came later, augmented by the delicious, but not excessively plentiful barbecue (which was snapped up in roughly 5 minutes.) Julianna Barwick dazzled the crowd with her mesmerizing dream pop—a spectacle made all the more fascinating by the nature of Barwick’s act: a one-woman show comprising of layer upon layer of vocals and effects amidst a sea of hazy keys. Think Andrew Bird, but totally unique and arguably better. And of course, Real Estate were spot-on, closing the barbecue with their laid-back, washed-out psychedelia.

A short while later, the crowd relocated to the Event Oval for some great electronica acts. No dubstep here; instead ARP and Blondes treated music fans to bubbly, vibrant trance with unfurling samples and persistent bass. The grooves were so alluring that by the time the Crystal Ark took the stage for their epic set, the dance floor was packed, at least by Event Oval standards.

One of the best things about WBAR-B-Q, as cliched as it sounds, is how its music brings people together. In the middle of The Crystal Ark’s disco-fest, the electricity completely cut out, halting both the music and trippy visuals. Rather than give up and leave, the crowd rallied behind the leadership of campy house prophet Gavin Russom in some serious accoustic grooving. The hand-claps and foot-stomps brought everyone in the room together, in a pretty amazing display of funky solidarity.

But of course, the show had to end, and at 11 pm sharp, Barnard security had to kick the music-lovers out. But the music never dies, and the fans dispersed to start their own shindigs—or at the very least, download the discographies of this WBAR-B-Q’s stellar lineup.

If you haven’t heard of wait what yet, your playlist is due for an update. Wait what, (aka Columbia alum Charlie Kubal, CC ’08) released his first album last Thursday called The Notorious xx (click for free download), a mash up of Biggie and The xx. It’s caught on: NYMag, Prefix Mag, and the general worldwidewebz have given the mashup their kudos. Charlie, who currently lives in San Fransisco, started out DJing in high school and was once in a band called Jubala. He’s played sets at bars and house parties, but recently has been more into creating new tracks. Here’s what has to say about his music and his time at Columbia.

Columbia’s influence

Columbia played a pretty substantial role for me — I did shows on WBAR for a couple semesters, recorded tracks in my room in McBain, and got to take classes from two of the most awesome music professors you could imagine: Brad Garton and Terry Pender at the Computer Music Center on 125th. ADP and Postcrypt were both really cool venues to check out new music, too.

The Columbia music scene was definitely getting better during my time — there were some awesome artists there: Vampire Weekend obviously leading the pack, but also Supraliminal, The Stolen Cars, Live+Direct, Kane, Reni Laine, Anton Glamb, Farm to Market — lots of people doing really cool stuff.

One thing that’s tough about Columbia is the tendency, that I found, for Columbia kids’ baseline attitude to be to dislike something — there’s a unique brand of hate that Columbia kids tend to have for new things, as if an implicitly negative attitude makes your opinion more compelling. I was guilty of this too, and when the Varsity Show touched on it (my Senior year, so ’08), and it really resonated.

How would you characterize your taste in music? How do you decide who you’re going to mix?

I like a ton of different music, and think that for any given situation, activity, or emotional state, there’s an ideal musical accompaniment. I like a lot of hip-hop, some indie rock, some straight pop — it kind of runs the gamut. One thing I try really hard to do is not let an artist’s popularity influence whether I like a song — the idea of a hipster not liking a band only because they’re popular is just as absurd, to me, as a 12-year-old not liking a song because it’s not on Now 57.

As for deciding what to mix, I usually look for thematic connections. I kind of think of it as similar, in a way, to doing a literary analysis of two texts, and comparing and contrasting. My hope with tracks I make is that people see who’s being put together, don’t immediately get the connection, but then after listening they appreciate the combination.

When and how did this particular album start? Any particular reasons why you chose Biggie and The xx in particular to mix an entire album?

I did all the initial demos for this album during a three week span in January, and the project first came about by putting together Juicy and VCR. I was visiting my sisters for their birthday (they’re twins, hence: two sisters, one birthday) at Williams, and was thinking back on all their former birthdays, and for some reason conjured this image of the Super Nintendo next to the VCR that used to be in our family room. The Biggie line about ‘Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis’ from Juicy and the chorus from VCR popped into my head, and I wanted to hear what they’d sound like together.

I think of different kinds of music as perfect fits for certain situations, and in a lot of ways The xx and Biggie are opposites — you listen to Biggie at a bar or club surrounded by friends, you hear The xx most often in iPod earbuds, alone. I became really intrigued by the idea of Biggie, as ‘extroverted’ music, stripped down and put over the xx, which I think of as ‘introverted’ music, and still matching up tracks that explored some similar lyrical themes.

You talked about different kinds of nostalgia going on in juicy-r. Would you say there’s an overall theme to the album?

So for people familiar with the xx’s record, I used every track of their album, in order, when I made this project. I had a whiteboard that I basically wrote tags of adjectives for each track on the album, and then also for about 30 Biggie tracks. Some of them were obvious matches from the outset, but some took a couple demos to really get down.

As far as a theme for the album, it’s dictated a bit by the themes of The xx’s album, but part of my aim was to create something that showcased both artists in such a way that fans of just Biggie or just The xx would appreciate the contributions from the other artist. I guess you could say the theme for the album was this notion of the extrovert meets the introvert.

Why did you decide to mash up the videos as well? Are there more videos coming?

The video mashup came together kind of last minute — I thought of it at work on the Tuesday before the record came out last week, and posted it that night. Since videos can sometimes show thematic elements of the songs more clearly that the songs on their own, video mashups can be a cool way to make a stronger link between the two original works. I don’t have any plans for another video right now, but could definitely see myself putting one together in the future — either for this project or a future project.

Every month, you also put a mix together on songs.i.like. How did this start? Where do you find you find your new songs?

Songs.i.like started actually when I was a sophomore in high school — each month, I carefully put together a mix of songs that I wanted to hear in the car that month, cramming as much as I could onto an 80 minute CD. I did things like bucket similar tracks with each other and put movie quotes or voicemails as skits to connect between different bunches of tracks.

My friends started asking me for copies of the mixes, and before long I was burning a dozen CDs and handing them out each month. When I got to college, I mailed them to friends for awhile, but no one really listens to physical CDs that much anymore, so I started the site in January 2007 to help spread music I liked to people.

I find the songs through a lot of different places: friends’ recommendations, Pandora, Hype Machine, blogs, things I hear in cafes — really, anywhere there’s music playing. I probably listen to a couple hundred new songs a month, but I’m definitely always looking for new recommendations.

Wait what has a few more one-off tracks on Facebook and plans to release more soon, so stay tuned!
