We probably should have mentioned something about this earlier, but we plead subconsciously willful ignorance. Let’s make it quick, then: the recent Shattered Glass-lite semi-scandal over at The New Republic heavily involves one Cpl. Matt “Rod Majors” Sanchez, who was used as a source for accusations of fictionalization. Surprised?
You probably know the story already, but here it is again: Allegations from The Weekly Standard came out that “Scott Thomas” (now outed as Scott Thomas Beauchamp), a soldier who was doing an Iraq diary for TNR, was fabricating unpleasant details and that he was hand-picked to write because he was married to a TNR reporter. Currently, TNR editors (and the military!) are still investigating, they say, and re-checking every piece of information. Sanchez, it turns out, was the guy telling TWS reporters that Thomas had cooked his facts.
Of course, not everyone is buying Sanchez’s story. A tipster passed along this Time Magazine blog entry today, which speaks for itself.

@Jan In another bizarre twist, Sanchez just created a poll on his site asking about DADT. It is on the left side: read it a couple of times and see if you notice the incredible freudian slip. I wish I could copy the image and print it here because it is another gem for the record books. Notice the poll is not an ad but was worded by Sanchez. Now this is a guy who writes for The Weekly Standard and is this blatantly sloppy:

What a complete weasel. Notice how he so casually inserts a total lie in there. First he talks about DADT which is about “homosexuals openly serving” but when he actually gets to the question he says “open homosexual conduct”. One has absolutely nothing to do with the other. You can be completely celibate and be discharged under DADT for just being identified as gay. Sexual conduct is a totally and completely different subject. In fact in a debate on Liveleak Sanchez accidentally divulged that he knew the specifics of UCMJ 125-a which prohibits heterosexual oral sex just as it does homosexual (they both fall under the term ‘sodomy’ in the military code). DADT has absolutely nothing to do with sexual conduct. There are only two explanations for Sanchez blatant error. He is incredibly sloppy and ignorant of DADT, a basic policy that has been in the news for years and recently in the Presidential debates (besides the point that Sanchez most certainly is aware of its details due to his gay porn past). Or the other option is that this writer for The Weekly Standard just intentionally lied to stir up more hatred towards gays. And he had the gall to demonize Scott Beauchamp for supposedly unprofessional writing.

I understand your point about Sanchez getting more publicity through my efforts, but if you take a close look at his activities I think you’d see that he’s been a self-generator of publicity long before I ever checked into his story.
I don’t know how old you are, but I’m old enough to recall the period when I laughed at, and then ignored, people who wound up running this country. In normal times, Sanchez wouldn’t be worthy of notice, but these are not normal times.

@Anonymous This has been pretty funny. First, the wingnuts tried to say that TNR’s diarist wasn’t a soldier at all. This came from a self-style “semiotician” who posts on Amazon.com. (You guys are the Ivy Leaguers, so could you tell me what a semiotician is? Thanks.)

That didn’t last too long, because soldier revealed his identity. So then the ‘wingers said the story can’t possibly be true. One of them said she’d gotten an e-mail from the guy’s sergeant assuring her that no one in the Army would ever do such a thing. And some Army flack said it couldn’t possibly happen, blah blah blah.
So then TNR re-investigates and finds people to back up each of the three anecdotes that the soldier told. But there’s a small discrepancy: the solider placed one incident in Iraq after he got there, but the confirmation placed it in Kuwait on his way to Iraq.
So the wingnuts open a new line of attack. Now the soldier is mean, because he was laughing at a disfigured woman BEFORE undergoing combat stress. Imagine that, a wingnut horrified that a soldier might be mean to the bone. Score a first for the humane wingnut brigade. And they say that the error in location makes everything the soldier-writer wrote a lie.
Wrong-o! After all, the one incident might have happened in Kuwait rather than Iraq, but it still happened. TNR got the confirmation from the soldier who was sitting with the writer when it happened.
Not satisfied with being wrong, another wingnut blogger invents a lie that TNR suddenly called a vacation for its entire staff for the purpose of ducking the right-wing heat. Oops, turns out that it’s August and TNR has scheduled the break because nothing’s happening in Washington in August so they send everyone home.
Now, wouldn’t you think this would be a signal to mutter a few apologies and go tilt at a different windmill? Nope, not at all. Now the wingnuts are saying, well, what ARE they saying? That the soldier is a “liar.” They must figure that if they repeat it often enough, they’ll convince themselves.
And that’s where Matt Sanchez comes in. You know, the paragon of truth, Matt Sanchez? He’s being trotted out to back up the preposterous idea that the soldier-writer is a liar.
Matt Sanchez! Mind you, this is a guy who has lied about each and every aspect of his life. He’s lied about his sexual orientation, about his porn career, about his prostitution, about his status in the Marine Corps. You name it, Matt Sanchez can’t open his mouth without a lie falling out.
Aside from the sheer comedy, there’s a bright side. When the wingnuts are down to relying on the “reporting” of a not-gay ex-gay porno not-whore not-really-Marine and not reporter, the end is truly at hand, wouldn’t you say?

@sanchez I just can’t figure out who he thinks he is telling TWS that Scott fabricated his story. He’s been to the mess hall a few times, never saw a woman like the one Scott described, and asked a few soldiers about the accounts in the story. That constitutes knowing the inauthenticity of the story???

He’s threatened blog authors with legal sanctions, lawsuits, personal attacks and downright intimidation to thwart their effort at banning him from web sites on medical issues (Charles Wilson suffers from a few), banned on sites on military issues (he hates the military, the troops and anyone who is patriotic), banned on political webs, economic issues webs, journalism webs, community discussion threads in Seattle (his new locale for spit & venom), he’s even been banned on webs about food groupies… now, that is pathetic.
If you read the balance of this thread, you’ll see clear evidence of why Charles Wilson is being banned from all these web sites and blogs… and you’ll get to see him in action with his cast of created sockpuppets.
You have to wonder why a grown man with serious medical conditions would engage in this kind of conduct. Trolling about the net, stalking anyone who speaks against his insanity.
