images_5_1With winter comes the meat of the basketball schedule; both the men’s and women’s teams are working themselves into shape through non-league contests.  The men scored a tough 75-70 victory over Lehigh Thursday, with senior Patrick Foley and junior Brian Grimes pacing the team with 21 points each.  Having stretched their lead to seven points midway through the second half, the team let Lehigh claw back to within three, but stayed cool from the foul line down the stretch to put the game away.  The team then traveled to Stony Brook Saturday but were denied a second consecutive win, falling, 63-60, in a frustrating effort.  They’ll travel to Staten Island Tuesday for a game against Wagner. The women’s team beat Delaware, 75-63, Wednesday, maintaining a comfortable 10-point cushion for most of the game.  The bench contributed a solid 25 points to the effort, with sophomore Mary Beato putting up a career-high 17, and junior Kathleen Barry led the way with 18.  The team then hosted St. John’s on Friday afternoon, posing a strong challenge to a talented Red Storm team before ultimately falling, 75-63.  Four Lions put up 13 points, and the 1700-plus marked an attendance record for the women’s team.  They’ll next travel with the men to Wagner on Tuesday.

The women’s swimming team defeated Wagner in Staten Island Saturday, taking first place in 10 of 11 events in picking up their first dual meet win of the year.  The team is now 1-2 in dual meets on the season, and will host Penn on Wednesday.
