Senior Wisdom: Katie Palillo

Written by

Name, school: Katie Palillo, BC

Claim to Fame: Student Government Association President. You also loved my Midnight Breakfasts.

Where are you going? Law school eventually. A reproductive rights advocate later. Barnard historian last.

Three things you learned at Columbia:

  1. A sense of community isn’t created by a new building or policy. It happens when you’re sitting around complaining about a paper, debating the administration at a meeting, or sitting in Liz’s Place trying to caffeinate before a 9am class.
  2. Public speaking (in the English department) was the most humbling class I’ve ever taken. It was challenging and real, and was seminar full of students I would want to be friends with.
  3. When emailing: “hope this finds you well” > “hope this finds you with food poisoning.” Even if the latter is closer to the truth.

Justify your existence in 30 words or fewer: I put “write to-do list” on my to-do list. This ensures that at least one thing gets done.

Any war stories from the War on Fun? No war story, but I tie-dyed the walkway in front of Barnard library my sophomore year for an event. The slate looked beautiful.

Would you rather give up oral sex or cheese? String cheese is my favorite after-school snack, but I don’t do ultimatums.

Any advice for the Class of 2014? Spend as much time as possible in the Diana. Go to a Philo meeting. Become best friends with everyone in Dining. Surround yourself with people who will love you even when you’re cranky, belligerent, or wrong.

Any regrets? Not telling more people how proud I am to go to their school. It’s been real, Barnard.

  1. Yay

Katie Palillo! If you haven't had the opportunity to meet her, she is really a wonderful person and friend.

"Three things you learned at Columbia"

Sweetie you didnt go to Columbia.

  3. Anonymous

Actually, Barnard students graduate with a degree from Columbia University.

    • Anonymous

      suuuuuuuuure they do

      • Alum

They do indeed. Their diplomas say "Columbia University", bear the university seal and are signed by the president of the university, just like CC grads'. The president of barnard also signs the diplomas in her role as dean in the university; her signature appears in the same place the CC dean's appears on CC diplomas.

        • its just a concession

and by concession i don't mean the act of conceding or yielding.

i mean like a hot dog that you buy at a ball game. columbia sells barnard the right to put CU on their diplomas in the form of the annual fee they pay to stay "affliated".

sounds like a bunch of girls trying to get into a sorority. oh wait. that is barnard.

    • honestly

This is 'senior wisdom'. It's so sad to see that, right until the very end, people can't let the whole Barnard/Columbia thing go. Seriously? Who cares?

(This is directed as much to Barnard girls who use every chance to remind people that they go to Columbia as it is to CC/SEAS students who use every chance to remind Barnard girls that they don't).

  4. Joy

Katie! You never told me you wanted to be the next Robert McCaughey, though I should have gathered as much from your fascinating GChat status links. I look forward to reading Stand, Barnard, or whatever you call it. I'm very very excited.

PS My recaptcha is "steadfast return." Fitting.

  5. pico

Prediction: With its new comment ratings, Bwog is going to become the new Bored at Butler and is going to get WAY more scandalous. People speak more when they have the chance for recognition of their words.

  6. Sarah

You can always tell an SGA girl by her publicly proclaimed love for the Diana and Liz's place... the rest of us Barnard girls know that in the Vag, Java City is only for grabbing and going.

  7. FOR REALS

Don't turn this into another stupid Columbia vs. Barnard catfight

Literally NOTHING new will be said

Here, you know what I'm just gonna save everyone some time and just sum up everything anyone is ever going to say with regards to this.

BARNARD STUDENTS GET A COLUMBIA DEGREE WITHOUT WORKING FOR IT

COLUMBIA STUDENTS ARE SNOTTY AND PRETENTIOUS

BARNARD STUDENTS STEAL ALL THE BOYS

COLUMBIA STUDENTS ARE JUST JEALOUS AND PETTY

I NEVER SAID I GO TO COLUMBIA I AM PROUD TO GO TO BARNARD

STOP USING COLUMBIA EMAIL ADDRESSES/FACEBOOK NETWORKS

    BARNARD STUDENTS ARE FEMINAZIS

I HAVE MET (X) MANY BARNARD/COLUMBIA STUDENTS AND THEY WERE ALL DUMB, ERGO ALL THE SCHOOL'S STUDENTS ARE DUMB

STOP USING ALL OF COLUMBIA'S RESOURCES/BARNARD STUDENTS PAY TO USE THOSE RESOURCES

    COLUMBIA TO WED/BARNARD TO BED

    ADMISSIONS STATISTIC
    ADMISSIONS STATISTIC
    ADMISSIONS STATISTIC

GET BACK IN THE KITCHEN AND MAKE ME A SANDWICH.

    you're welcome.
now go debate something worthwhile, like cheese vs. oral sex.

  8. philo!

go to a philo meeting = true senior wisdom :)

  9. anonymous

    this is great! love her.

also, bwog, please include more barnard students in senior wisdom! they are dominated by CC students every year....

  10. confused

many columbians have never been to the vag or to barnard for that matter--i don't get how they would understand most of what this girl said. It is in frickin code. Public speaking (only in Barnard), Liz's cafe, even barnard library--barnard has a library? then whyyy is it so hard to find a seat in butler?

she even addresses her comments to Barnard seniors--a tiny percentage of graduating seniors from umbrella CU--mostttt people cannot relate to this. That is why people have a problem with Barnard senior wisdoms-- it's like they seriously do not go to our school. Even their experiences that they share and they suggest we do more of are foreign to most Columbians.

So while the list above is extensive, it is not exhaustive. it is not always an issue of better or worse--simply just different. i might as well go read princeton's blog to reminisce about all out old eating club memories.

    • So basically

You have a problem when Barnard students act like they go to Columbia, but you also have a problem when they act like they don't go to Columbia. Interesting.

    • OK

I get your argument, but we at Barnard spend a lot more of our time at Columbia because it has so many resources (which is why a lot of us chose Barnard in the first place... a small college with the resources of a large university). Columbians have and should take the opportunity to get to know the Barnard campus. Plenty of people come over for Hewitt anyway. I'm not saying you need to come over everyday, there's a lot less to see; but to us our college experience includes Columbia, so let us be a part of the Bwog.

    • Alum

Barnard accounts for between 25% and 30% of CU bachelor's degrees each year. That's more than SEAS and GS combined, and is hardly "a tiny percentage of graduating seniors from umbrella CU".

    • Ahaha YES,

Idk who you are, but I love you.

      CC girls ftw!

  11. Surfin' UWS

Ah.... Senior Wisdom, aka "Open yourself up to us so we can squat in and take a dump".

  12. Giselle Leon

I LOVE KATIE PALILLO LIKE NO OTHER

  13. Anonymous

I'm not trying to start any confrontation, so please don't take this the wrong way.

Why doesn't Barnard have a blog like Bwog which could cover their students and their activities? Maybe there should be a Barnard section of Bwog?

  14. Anonymous

Great friend and all around really nice person. For those of you who haven't gotten to know her, you're definitely missing out.

  15. Anonymous

Okay Bwog, now I just know you are going for page views. You think people were clamoring for Barnard Senior Wisdoms? (No.) Can't you do anything right?

  16. most

of you choose Barnard, because Columbia rejected you.

    No better than NYU...

  17. Anonymous

this comment system would be cool if "thumbs down" comments weren't hidden. i dont want to have to click on "view" every time i want to read a funny comment that is offensive to some people

  18. l o l

is all i have to say about all of these comments flaming barnard. just lol. in other news, katie is a sweetheart!<3

  19. Barnard

Katie has done a fantastic job this year. I love her lots.

  20. Katie Palillo

is the best person I have ever met in the world. Not even slightly kidding. <3 you Katie 2! (ps - Resolution: Since you get a Senior Wisdom, I get to be Katie 1 forever? Sounds reasonable to me.)

  21. Seriously

"To be fair, that’s almost like polling The University of Phoenix on how many of them applied to Cambridge. Just saying."

Proof that Barnard girls lack simple rhetoric and perhaps why Columbia rejected them

    • You're

a moron. Clearly the person who you quoted is a CC/SEAS student and you can't read.

But this is all besides the point, because I wish that I had gone to BC, and I find all of this Barnard hating to be rather ridiculous. It's a great place. So is Columbia. Woo.

  22. Anonymous

I LOVE KATIE SO MUCH. SHE IS DEVOTED, ENTHUSIASTIC, GENUINE, COMPASSIONATE, AND BRINGS OUT THE BEST IN EVERYONE AROUND. WATCH OUT WORLD, KATIE IS COMING!

  23. Dueaa Elzin

Katie Palillo is an amazing person and I wish her all the best post-Barnard!

  24. Bwog!

Please write about the Carman \fires\. It is the 3rd time in less than a day that the whole building has been evacuated after the fire alarms go off falsely. Columbia should get its sh$t together, especially when people are studying for finals.

  25. RATING SYSTEM

PLEASE MAKE IT SO WE DONT HAVE TO "UNHIDE" ALL THE HIDDEN COMMENTS. ATLEAST MAKE AN OPTION WE CAN TWEAK. THIS IS SO TEDIOUS. I READ BWOG FOR COMIC RELIEF AND NOW ITS WORK TO EVEN GET TO THE FUNNY ONES! NOW THIS WILL PROB BE HIDDEN AND NOBODY WILL READ MY SUGGESTION. GREAT SYSTEM, BWOG

  26. Yawwn

Give me a reason why you would choose Barnard over Columbia when applying to colleges......number 30 liberal arts vs .... at least top 5 overall...

  27. Katie

is without a doubt one of the nicest people I've ever met. She always went out of her way to talk to the more shy people who might feel uncomfortable. She's just so sweet!

  28. Hmm...

What did this lady do to you that you put a picture of her looking like a 48-year-old soccer mom up for all to see?

  29. I LOVE YOU

    KATIE!!!!!

    -YOUR ADORING BC '10 FAN!!!!

  30. Ahh, thank you

for reminding me why I'm glad I don't go to Barnard

  31. Isaac Lara

<3 KATIE IS AWESOMEEEE. Truly a pleasure knowing her. No doubt about it she's going to do big things =D

  32. Katie

always wears too much eyeliner. But I'd still do her.

  33. spend

as much time as possible in the diana?

  34. Anonymous

I love you, Katie!! You are the sweetest!

  35. weiny

get some diversity in senior wisdom, late ass bwog.

  36. BC'10

NEWSFLASH barnard students need to make a concerted effort to stop commenting on these stupid posts in defense of the school. its a lose-lose situation because you're up against a bunch of *anonymous* insecure wisecracks who will keep repeating the SAME vitriol over. and over. again. if you want to keep hearing it, keep posting.

I have some Columbia guy friends who say they just post mean things to get us riled up. and it works......every time.

    • Anonymous

      They sound like great friends

    • Anonymous

barnard responses just provide cc kids the opportunity to further shame barnard chicks

    • barnard

For kicks, an EX-boyfriend of mine used to post anti-Barnard comments just to start the ball rolling. A sorry waste of time. I agree that it could end if we didn't bait- especially knowing it often starts as a joke (albeit, not a funny one).

My new Columbia guy has much more class and I've met many other Columbians, male and female, who think these comments make our community look weak and bitter.

  37. I wonder

If there will ever be a time when the Barnard vs Columbia vs Superiority debate will ever stop.

    The trolling certainly won't.

By second semester freshman year, everyone should just get the fuck over it, no?
Do these peeps, the serious ones, not realize the level of maturity and moot-ness of the debate?
And finally, do they not realize that by even dignifying the trolling with comments of any kind, they are quite simply demonstrating that they do not deserve to be in EITHER school?

Goddammit kids, this is New York City. Do you really have nothing better to do?!

    -CC'10

    PS
The voting system is interesting. Y'all need to tweak the ratio better cause it is rather annoying to "unhide" comments. I hope you kept the ability to remove comments entirely -- you know, limit "free speech" and all.

You should have a thumbs up category where all the comments with the highest ratings get posted.

Those with the lowest ratings get deleted. booooo

  38. Anonymous

hold on. i feel like the large jock/meat head/got-in-because-of-my-rich-parents-and-exclusive-private-school population at columbia evens out whatever mythic disparity in intelligence level between cc and bc.

i go to bc and i beat your ass in your class.

  39. I propose that..

Columbia and Barnard merge and the parasitic organism on the northwest corner of 116th and Broadway be renamed the Barnard Institute for Advanced Study

  40. Love her!

Katie, thank you so much for everything you do for Barnard. You make me proud to be a strong, beautiful, Barnard woman!

  41. Anonymous

I really wish the comments further down in this thread reflected the awesome usefulness and insight of this post. Alas, people still don't get it.

  42. BCstudentz

what did katie do in her time here? same old same old...it's not like barnard has had any substantial positive changes in her time as part of the SGA...midnight breakfast is mid breakfast, school spirit is school spirit....it's the same corny useless events on campus...what did she do anyways? why do people at this school give her so much credit...
the university is filled with a bunch of incompetent people anyways, who are always getting praise and credit for the stupidest and trivial things.

  43. so....

Katie has all over her facebook that she went to Columbia and not Barnard... shame.
