Vote on this Spring’s Bacchanal Lineup

Written by

Update: Organizers of Bacchanal have pulled together funds from councils and are now at roughly the same budget they had two years ago for Chewbacchanal. Here’s an explanatory video CCSC made about the club’s financial situation:

In the democratic spirit of the recent elections, the people from Bacchanal want to know what sort of band you want occupying the steps during Bacchanal this spring. While a dispute with the administration set Bacchanal’s budget back significantly and caused the cancellation of Bacchanal’s fall concert, the group currently has ~ $38,000 $100,000 to spend on the act of your choice. Tell them what sort of sound you’re interested in by voting in the poll to the right, or, if you feel hindered by the choices available write in the specific style, artist, or vibe to which you dream of getting your crunk on in the comments section of this post. Reach Bacchanal directly here..

Jesus. For that money, we'll be lucky to get a student band.

(And for people suggesting Arcade Fire/Lonely Island: do you have any idea of how much a known act costs?)

    • Holy Crap!

I was about to say the same thing! Turquoise Jeep is the bomb! They do play at colleges, they're much more affordable than Snoop Dogg or nearly anyone else, and they're twice as good. For those who don't know, they're the crew who brought us instant classics like "Lemme Smang It": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xt5ghXdq6Z0

It has baffled me that we live in one of the richest places for new music in the country, and somehow our past few spring concerts have been rather lackluster in ambition, booking acts that honestly any college in the country could bring, if they wanted and had the money.

You can do a lot with $38,000. Artists like Lana Del Rey, Cults, or Small Black (yes, I know tastes differ, but let's be real, but I think we can objectively say that each of these artists has some form of significant following) who are gaining popularity but who don't charge artist fees beyond $5000.

I would honestly rather see several less-known bands of high quality who have the potential to be big (such as Grizzly Bear, who did get much bigger) than some hip hop singer who has basically become a parody of him or herself (read: Snoop Dogg). Why not an all-day music festival that could accommodate the diverse tastes of the entire student body rather than one big concert that might only satisfy a few aurally? You can also get a great electronic act to DJ into the night. Glowsticks come very cheaply in bulk, and cosponsorship from student groups is a possible and more likely to happen with a diverse lineup of musicians.

Actual suggestions, bearing in mind that these are my own tastes: Wild Beasts, The Weeknd, M83, Baths, Oh Land, Lana Del Rey, various other bands that are making the rounds in the city right now. Oh, and the person who said The Arcade Fire up there.

    • Yanyi

Oh, and this, too: give Columbia students some credit. I think a large number of us have some sort of musical background, and know something good when we hear it. The only nice thing about famous people is that we can brag about it to our friends from other schools, but who gives a shit about that, in the end, if we had a bad time? Bacchanal is one of the only times of the year when the entire student body gets together; some of us will go even if we hate the music because it's about being part of this awesome Columbia tradition. So it's better when the music doesn't suck.

    • nathan

and cults and LDR def cost more than 5000 at this point. i think any band that has a vevo costs more than 5k

    • Anonymous

Lana Del Ray is just so fucking awful

    • Anonymous

      Love me some M83

    • Anonymous

I totally agree with you, but unfortunately the Bacchanal crew already tried this. My freshman year (2007-08) we had Grizzly Bear and the National play. Despite the fact that both were pretty well known and had just played some major shows at the time, everybody complained. The show was amazing, but very few people even came.

      • Anonymous

Fuuuck complainers. There are some people who just have bad musical taste, and of course you'll have to just accept that.

I'm pretty sure there's a saying that goes something like "you can't make something great without having some people hate it" -- this is definitely applicable for music.

By the way, I hate shitty rap. Why do I have to suffer?

      • Yanyi

I think there's a way you can balance that, though. Since Bacchanal is in the afternoon, you can have a more indie rock band play during the day and book a great DJ / hip hop artist to play into the party that is sure to follow that night. I'm sure there are logistical issues that I'm not aware of, but perhaps you could work around those.

        • Anonymous

Same poster as above: yeah I agree with this. I'm just concerned people who don't like terrible rap and dubstep are being squeezed out of the equation. Maybe Bacchanal committee members assume that everyone likes that crap.

I don't want all four years here to have lame Bacchanals that cater to people without musical taste. Not saying that rap or dubstep can't be tasteful, because rap at least can be, but nowadays they are the preference of people who just don't listen to music.

          • Anonymous

Truth. I was always shocked that in NY of all places people would still be pretty close-minded as to music. Although you should check out some WBAR shows if you're into that sort of music.

I don't think you'll end up with the Snoop Dogg disaster that happened last year, at least. With $38,000 they definitely couldn't afford something that terrible.

    • Yanyi

I still stand by this suggestion after the recent update, even more so with this size of a budget.

  83. the music we need

we need stuff the crowd can get into, rather than just stand around and watch. That being said, no post-dub or super alt-indie-chill-rock, no matter how much I enjoy listening to it. I'd rather have Girl Talk/Super Mash, Matt&Kim (they've been known to do cheap shows if it's in the city), Passin Pit, etc. that would actually be a fun concert. Hell, I'd even take some frat rap (Hoodie, IanJ, Sam Adams, etc.) if it meant avoiding a Borechannal
