Zombies on their way to prom?

Bored? Where Art Thou? is here to help. There’s no better way to procrastinate studying for finals and writing twenty-page papers then seeing the many arts events on and off campus this weekend! If you’d like to help your fellow classmates delay their studies, submit your event to events@bwog.com.

Thursday

  • Fall 2011 Student Prints, 5 pm – 7 pm in the Leroy Nieman Gallery (310 Dodge). Showing works by Columbia students in the Relief, Intaglio and Intro to Printmaking classes. The opening reception is actually a closing reception, but there are still free tipples. Free.
  • Zombie Prom, 8 pm in Lerner Black Box. Additional showings on Friday at 8 pm and Saturday at 2 pm and 8 pm. Come see CMTS’s second fall show! Boy meets girl, girl’s parents don’t approve, boy jumps into nuclear reactor, boy becomes zombie… all in the first ten minutes of the show! Tickets at $5 at the TIC.
  • Ubu the King,  8 pm in VagBox. Additional showings on Friday at 8 pm and Satuday at 3 pm and 8pm. The Theatre Department presents Alfred Jarry’s “Ubu the King.” Director Sharon Fogarty brings this European classic to the stage, though “classic” is perhaps the last word its iconoclastic playwright would have applied to it. $5 with CUID, $10 without.
  • Wishes and Thieves/ Life Size Maps/ Osekre & The Lucky Bastards/ Shark?, 8 pm at the Big Snow Buffalo Lodge, 89 Varet St. in Brooklyn. Come support Columbia/Columbia Alum bands Life Size Maps and Osekre, respectively.
  • PitchBlak Brass Band at the Shrine, 10:30 pm at the Shrine, 2271 Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd. PitchBlak Brass Band will capture your body and make you move! This ten-piece NYC based hip-hop brass band was formed in the fall of 2010. Since then, PitchBlak has been dedicated to entertaining audiences throughout NYC with their unique sound. PitchBlak draws upon its many members’ musical backgrounds and infuses their hip-hop driven music with funk, jazz, rock and classical music. The result is a sound rich with luscious brass harmonies, intense with thoughtful raps, and energetic with grooving rhythms. Free.

  • MPP Chamber Ensembles in Concert, 7 pm in the Sulzberger Parlor (Barnard). Works by Mendelssohn, Mahler,Weber, Brahms, Shostakovich, Dvorak. Free.
  • Collegium Musicum, 8 pm in St Paul’s Chapel. Works by Haydn, Mozart, Marenzio, Palestrina. Free.
  • CU Jazz Ensembles, 8 pm in Dodge 112. Properly appreciate the snippets of swing that sometimes diffuse onto College Walk from the bowels of Dodge. Directed by Victor Lin. Free.
  • Composer Portrait: John Zorn, 8 pm in Miller Theatre.The iconic avant-gardist John Zorn returns to Miller with an incredibly ambitious lineup, featuring four world premieres played by some of his favorite musicians from New York and beyond.$12 with CUID, $25 without. Don’t miss a rare solo encore performed by Zorn himself on the beautiful Aeolian-Skinner organ at St. Paul’s Chapel following the Portrait!   • CU Swing Dance presents This Joint is Jumpin’: Biannual Semi-Formal!, 8:30 pm to midnight in the Diana Event Oval. It’s that time of year again! Join CU Swing Dance for This Joint is Jumpin’: a stompin’ swing dance fiesta featuring New York’s own Grand Street Stompers. Feel-good New Orleans jazz, lovely dancing, lovelier company, and good times will abound.   • Columbia Middle Eastern Music Ensemble, 3 pm in 301 Philosophy. A concert of vocal and instrumental music from the Middle East, Balkans, North Africa, and their diasporas. Directed by Ozan Aksoy and Farzaneh Hemmasi. Free.
  • Expect the Great: CU Gospel Choir and Band, 5 pm in Lerner Party Space. Various types of gospel music including traditional, urban contemporary and contemporary pieces. Tickets are $3 from the TIC.

  • Barnard-Columbia Chorus: Annual Candlelight Concert, 8 pm in James Chapel at Union Theological Seminary. Join the Barnard-Columbia Chorus, under the baton of the inimitable Gail Archer, for their Annual Winter Candlelight Concert, featuring beautiful South American music as well as traditional carols. $5 with CUID, $10 without.

  • CU Wind Ensemble presents “Traveling East,” 2 pm to 3:30 pm in Roone. The CU Wind Ensemble will embark on a journey from Occident to Orient. Come take a trip as we leave the West behind and perform music channeling Korean, Chinese, and Japanese themes. Free with CUID, $5 without.
  • CU Guitar Ensemble, 6:30 pm in 201 Philosophy Hall. We will have a mix of ensemble and solo performances (with one stellar duet), ranging over different genres within the realm of classical music. Free.

Monday

  • Voice Ensemble Concert, 7:30 pm in 301 Philosophy. Free.
  • XMAS!6: A Mall-y Jolly XMAS!, 8 pm and 10:15 pm in Roone. XMAS! is an annual holiday-themed production performed in Roone Arledge Auditorium each December. It is written, composed, directed, choreographed, art-directed, produced, and performed entirely by students. The show satirizes and celebrates many aspects of the holiday season, ultimately bringing together a diverse group of people from all walks of life to enjoy a special time of year. $1 with CUID, $10 without. $25 for VIP tickets.
