Big news for frat row! Sigma Alpha Epsilon will join the Columbia Greek community next fall after being approved by the Interfraternal Council on Wednesday, according to one of its founders. Two students, Anirbar Poddar CC’14 and Kofi Agyapong CC’15, spearheaded the effort to bring SAE to Columbia, the only Ivy League school without a chapter.

After the long process leading up to Wednesday’s decision, the two founders still have to meet a number of requirements over the next year before they gain full recognition from the university, so it doesn’t look like they’ll be throwing any NSOP ragers for a while. The “colony,” as it’s called, will need approval from both Columbia and SAE nationals in order to become a legitimate chapter. SAE has been in the news recently for hazing incidents at Dartmouth and Cornell, but the IFC nonetheless gave the green light to start a trial period for the organization. As the nation’s second largest fraternity, SAE has over 300,000 initiated members with 247 chapter and 17 colonies across the country. Looks like we can add Columbia to that list.
