Don’t you worry, Barnard women; we didn’t forget about housing selection for you! Continuing the tradition for the second year in a row, we bring you the reviews for Barnard dorms! We continue with another Barnard dorm whose colloquial title is a mouthful of six’s: 620 West 116th.

Location: 620 W 116th St.

  • Nearby dorms: 600, 616, the Quad, Schapiro, Woodbridge, Elliott
  • Stores and restaurants: Morton Williams, anything you could ever desire on Broadway

Cost:

  • Single: $10,400
  • Double: $8,960

Amenities:

  • Bathrooms: Each suite has its own bathroom.
  • AC/Heating: No AC.
  • Kitchen/Lounge: Each suite has a kitchen with a sink, gas stove/oven, and refrigerator. Depending on the layout your suite could have some good common area within it already. The building itself has a TV lounge on the first floor. Some kitchens have been “renovated,” which only includes a new-ish gas stove and free-standing granite counter sink that contrasts the rest of the untouched kitchen.
  • Laundry: In basement.
  • Computers/Printers: Computer lab on the first floor of 616 that all the 600 buildings on 116th are to use (that’s kind of a bitch in the winter)
  • Gym: Gotta make the trek across 116 to the gym in Barnard Hall.
  • Intra-transportation: Two elevators and a stairwell.
  • Wi-Fi: Yes.
  • Hardwood/Carpet: This black linoleum-esque flooring that is nicer than more authentic looking linoleum but you still wish it were hardwood.

Screen Shot 2015-04-11 at 3.32.00 PMRoom variety:

  • Floors 1-4 have suites with doubles and singles, while floors 5 and up are all 4-5 person suites with singles only. These are voraciously taken by seniors within the first few selections on Senior Day.
  • Some singles are absolutely huge, and some seem just like a room that Res Life claimed too big to be a closet.

Numbers:

  • This building is consistently a first-choice pick for lucky seniors.
  • Mixed junior-senior groups might have a shot on Junior Day (definitely not for a suite with all singles), but it’ll definitely be full by Sophomore Day.

Bwog recommendation:

  • Location is super great to on-campus buildings; you face the back of the Freshman Quad but you definitely feel like you live off campus.
  • If you’re not shafted, you have huge windows facing 116th.
  • Young Barnard grasshoppers, aspire to live here.

Resident opinions:

  • “Well hey, our dorm didn’t catch fire!”
  • “The fact that our door is like 200 feet after that steep incline on 116th starts can be a real bitch when you’re pushing to get to your 8:40. But I can’t complain about being this close to everything and having a single.”
  •  “My suite and I have been dreaming about our all singles suite since we were all living in Brooks freshman year! Seniors, you must live here!!!”
  • “My single is spacious, and I like that we don’t have that much variety of grades here. People are really chill cause we’re all seniors.”
  • “When you’re in the really slow elevator it constantly feels like it’s shaking and it won’t ever go away. Can be terrifying when you’re really drunk and just trying to get home and the ride up feels like years.”
  • “It makes sense that the building hasn’t been renovated since 1966.”
