Sports Editor Abby Rubel is pleased to bring you good news on the first Monday of the semester.

Men’s Basketball: The Lions (6-10, 1-1 Ivy) defeated Cornell (9-9, 1-1 Ivy) 73-70 on Saturday. Sophomore Gabe Stefanini and senior Quinton Adlesh led the team to victory with key last-minute plays. With just over 12 seconds to play, with Columbia up just 69-68, Adlesh hit a jump shot to give Columbia a three-point lead. A Cornell layup trimmed Columbia’s lead again, but with 5.7 seconds to go, Stefanini hit two free throws to put the game away. Adlesh and Stefanini combined for 45 points on the game. Junior Patrick Tapé also had a successful game, recording his second double-double of the season in points and rebounds.

Women’s Basketball: Women’s basketball (5-10, 1-1 Ivy) also defeated Cornell (7-6, 1-1 Ivy) over the weekend, 65-57. Columbia dominated in the first half, leading by as many as 18 points and going into halftime 36-22. A third quarter comeback put Cornell within one basket, but junior Janiya Clemmons responded with back-to-back shots to increase Columbia’s lead. Of Clemmons’s 16 points, 10 came in the fourth quarter. A three-pointer from sophomore Riley Casey and five successful free throws put the game away.

Men’s Swimming and Diving: The Lions (4-4, 2-4 Ivy) handed Navy (11-3) its third defeat of the season in their last home meet of the season, winning 161-137. They also honoured the team’s four seniors: Shane Brett, Kevin Fulton, Pearce Kieser, and Brian Tsau. Fulton came in fifth in the one and three-meter dives, and Tsau placed first in both the 1000-yard and 500-yard freestyle races. Columbia dominated early on, making it difficult for Navy to come back. Sophomore Jonathan Suckow continued his dominant streak, placing first in both diving events.
