Here’s your daily Bwoglines—shaken, not stirred.
Happening in the World: Iran and major powers such as the United States and Russia appear poised to agree on a new nuclear deal, which they could ratify as early as the end of this week. The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, a pact that former President Donald Trump withdrew from in 2018, offers Iran reduced sanctions in exchange for limitations on their nuclear program. The US has indicated that the security of the nuclear pact is contingent on Iran’s consent to a prisoner swap; however, Iran denies that the possible release of American prisoners is linked to the deal. Happening in the US: On Tuesday, a Georgia jury decided that the actions of the three men who murdered Ahmaud Arbery were principally motivated by racism and therefore constituted hate crimes. Because hate crimes are federal crimes, this decision ensures that the men will serve significant sentences in prison regardless of the status of their separately-prosecuted murder charges. At least two of the three defendants, Travis McMichael and Gregory McMichael, will likely serve life in prison with no possibility of parole. (NYT)
Happening in NYC: Governor Kathy Hochul, in collaboration with Mayor Eric Adams and the mayors of the five other largest cities in New York, has announced the creation of the Joint Security Operations Center to combat cybersecurity threats. The Center, which will be located in downtown Brooklyn, is the newest development in New York state’s proactive approach to cybersecurity in light of current geopolitical tensions regarding Russia and Ukraine.
