A bloom a day keeps the seasonal depression away. Editor’s Note: mentions of death and antisemitism.
Happening in the World: Ben Ferencz, The last surviving prosecutor from the post-World War Two Nuremberg trials, has died at age 103. Ferencz was born in Transylvania in 1920 but emigrated to the US with his family to escape antisemitism at a young age, eventually settling in New York. After graduating from Harvard Law School in 1943, he enlisted in the US Army where he eventually rose in rank and joined a team investigating and gathering evidence of Nazi war crimes. At only age 27, he secured the convictions of Nazi officers for war crimes against humanity. The US Holocaust Museum said the world had lost a “leader in the quest for justice for victims of genocide” when confirming his death. (BBC)
Happening in the US: A moose walked into the Providence Alaska Medical Center, Alaska’s largest hospital in Anchorage, and began eating plants in the lobby. “Moose visit throughout the year and we see an occasional bear during the summer months,” hospital spokesperson Mikal Canfield shared with CBS News, adding most are without incident. “This is the first time in recent memory that a moose has come inside.” The security team was eventually able to coax the moose back outside, where it settled down on a patch of grass for a nap. Happening in NYC: It’s cherry blossom season in NYC! On Friday, the city parks department announced that peak blooms will occur a little earlier this year, and intrepid bloom enthusiasts are encouraged to visit spots like the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens or Cherry Hill at Central Park. Of course, you can always take a casual stroll down your neighborhood, as around 34,000 cherry trees line the city streets. (Gothamist)
