Happening in the World: Another Russian vessel was sunk by Ukrainian military forces off of the coast of Crimea. The ship was a part of Russia’s Black Sea fleet, which has been consistently targeted by Ukraine in this long standing—nearly three year—war with Russia. Following the news of the sinking, Russia launched a missile attack targeting the Ukrainian town of Selydove, which hit a local hospital and nine surrounding blocks. (BBC)
Happening in the US: A shooting wounding at least 21 and killing at least one occurred at a parade celebrating the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl win on February 14. The shooting occurred near Kansas City’s Union Station and three potential suspects have been detained. This story is still developing. (NYT)
Happening in NYC: The New York City Department of Education is entering a lawsuit with the companies that own Snapchat, Instagram, Tik Tok, Facebook, and Youtube, claiming that the social media platforms are causing mental health issues in adolescents. Mayor Eric Adams said that the apps cause young people to be “exposed to content that often leads to insecurity and depression,” the city considering it a public health crisis. The district is the plaintiff in the suit, alongside hundreds of other school districts across the US. (The Gothamist)
