Happening in NYC: New York City is taking a crucial step in aligning with global waste management practices by introducing large containers for trash disposal, a practice adopted by many cities worldwide for decades. The city’s sanitation department issued a request for proposals on Friday, seeking suppliers of “European-style” on-street containers designed for residential trash in Manhattan Community District 9, encompassing West Harlem. The plan is to implement these containers throughout the district in spring 2025, with a subsequent “full citywide expansion” following community outreach and environmental review processes, according to the department. The sought-after containers should have the capacity to accommodate around 28 large trash bags each and measure approximately four cubic yards, as specified by sanitation officials. (Gothamist)
