Happening in the World: Ghana’s Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia has accepted defeat and congratulated former President John Mahama on winning Saturday’s election. Mahama was President from 2012 to 2017, when current President Nana Akufo-Addo—who is stepping down due to the two-term limit in office—won, and his presidency suffered from an ailing economy and was filled with political scandal and power cuts. The election has come during an economic crisis in the country, with young people struggling to get jobs and the cost of basic goods increasing. Although Bawumia has embraced defeat, the Elections Committee has yet to officiate the result due to supporters of both major political parties impeding their progress. (BBC)

Happening in the US: A US federal appeals court has upheld a law requiring ByteDance to divest TikTok in the US by early next year or face a ban. In their support of the law, the appeals court stated that the law is part of a larger project of countering a national security threat from the People’s Republic of China. Although ByteDance plans to appeal the ban to the Supreme Court, arguing that the law impedes free speech, it currently has until January 19, 2025 to divest or face a ban. President Biden could grant a 90-day extension of the sale. (Reuters)

Happening in NYC: After a fire broke out in a two-story house in Jersey City on Friday, firefighters rescued a baby and a 17-year-old girl. The baby, unconscious and 15 months old, was trapped between a bed and a wall, and the girl was rushed to the hospital. From three houses, 17 adults and six children have been displaced and multiple pets have died because of the fire, whose cause is currently under investigation. (ABC)

Happening in Our Community: Instructor Ása Ólafsdóttir from the MFA Sound Art program will host a workshop offering an introduction to the inexpensive digital audio workstation software Reaper, which has a 60-day free trial. No previous experience is required. The workshop is available to Columbia and Barnard students, faculty, and staff. It will be held on Zoom on Monday, December 9 from 6 to 7:30 pm.
