New York City is packed with amazing culture and inspiring art and now with so much of it online for free, there’s never been a better time to experience it first-hand. “Where Art Thou” is a weekly guide to interesting and notable lectures, events, and performances for the literary/musically/theatrically-inclined.

Performances:

  • The Columbia Musical Theatre Society opens their fall 2020 season with Jason Robert Brown’s The Last Five Years premiering on November 19th, 20th, and 21st at 8 pm EST.
  • The Columbia University Players’ first mainstage show of the season, Radio Island, will be performed in two parts with part one airing on November 20th at 7:30 pm EST and part two on November 21st at 7:30 pm EST.
  • On November 18th at 8 pm EST, the New York Japan Society will be performing Underground Fairy, an interactive virtual play about “isolation, inclusiveness, and the meaning of ‘community'” following the story of a half-fairy-half-human living in a fairy world.
  • The Nightly Met Opera streams continue every night at 7:30 pm EST. The selections of the week are:

Music:

  • On November 19th at 7:30 pm EST, Carnegie Hall will be honoring the late Supreme Court Justice in Remembering Ruth Bader Ginsburg noting “when she needed a respite from the pressures of the Supreme Court, Justice Ginsburg famously turned to the world of classical music.” The event will feature performances by Joyce DiDonato, Denyce Graves, and others streamed live from Carnegie Hall.   • The Columbia University School of the Arts and the Miller Theatre will host cellist Mariel Roberts in their Pop-ups in the Lantern series on November 17th at 7 pm EST. Roberts will be performing a solo recital featuring classic pieces as well as original work from her own repertoire
