The Lions dominate the Rams and tally their second four-goal-game of the season.

Columbia Women’s Soccer (3-1-1) bounced back from their 2-0 loss to No. 17-ranked Georgetown with back-to-back wins against Stony Brook (3-5) and Fordham (1-6) this week. Both games led to the Lions tallying four goals. Seven different goal scorers participated in the two wins, showing the team they have offensive depth. After allowing one goal against Stony Brook, the Lions stood strong and shut out Fordham in Sunday’s game. With five saves total between the two games, Columbia looks to be strong in the midfield as well, halting attacks before they can even come close to the defensive third. 

The rain surely didn’t hinder the Lions goal scoring ability on Sunday, with Shira Cohen (CC ‘24) striking just seven minutes into the game, putting Columbia up 1-0. The Lions spent the next three minutes in Fordham’s half, leading to the Rams conceding a penalty after fouling Maia Tabion (CC ‘26). Taibon stepped up to the penalty mark and took the penalty with ease, granting Columbia a 2-0 lead only 10 minutes into the game. Although the Lions spent a majority of the half on the offensive against Fordham, notching 14 shots in the first half alone, they failed to put another ball in the back of the net. 

Halftime: 2-0 Columbia

Once again, Columbia struck shortly after kickoff as Ania Prussak (CC ‘25) took a free kick from about 30 yards out. Fordham’s goalkeeper struggled with the shot, making an error on what should have been a routine catch, and the ball slowly bounced over the goal line. The Lions, now up 3-0, still did not relent in their barrage against the Rams. Between Prussak’s and Columbia’s next goal, the Lions took eight shots and three corner kicks, finally breaking through again in the 70th minute. Blake Turner (CC ‘23) scored off of a loose ball that deflected off of a Fordham defender. The Lions finished the game with 27 shots, with 19 of those shots being placed on goal, contributing to their largest win of the season and their most domineering game since winning 6-0 against Adelphi in October of last year.

Fulltime: 4-0 Columbia

The Columbia Women’s Soccer Team has scored 13 goals in just five games this season and certainly look poised to dominate the rest of the season. However, when Ivy League competition begins in late September, the Lions will have their work cut out for them, as three teams, Brown (4-1-1), Dartmouth (4-1-1), and notably Harvard (6-0), all currently boast better records than the Lions. Although, of the four teams, the Lions have been the only team to face a nationally ranked opponent (No. 17 Georgetown) so far. Columbia will play its next game at Seton Hall (3-2-2) on Wednesday, September 15.
