Happening in the World: Former Defense Minister Shigeru Ishiba has won the Liberal Democratic Party’s leadership contest and will become Japan’s next prime minister in October. It was Ishiba’s fifth attempt to lead the party, and he will succeed outgoing Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. Ishiba will work to lower Japan’s high inflation rates and has called for an Asian version of the NATO bloc. (CNN)
Happening in the US: SpaceX has launched two new crew members to the International Space Station in a capsule that will bring back two NASA astronauts who flew on Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft. NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov will round out the Expedition 72 crew and will return to Earth in February alongside NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, who were supposed to be back on Earth in June. Happening in NYC: A paralegal at a New York City district attorney’s office has been arrested after he attempted to make an explosive to bomb a migrant shelter. Derek Klever, a 27-year-old trial preparation assistant at the Queen’s District Attorney Office, was frustrated with partying at Kamway Lodge in Elmhurst, a small hostel that has been used to temporarily house migrants arriving from the southern border of the United States. Klever has been arrested and charged with making a terroristic threat, criminal possession of a weapon and endangering the welfare of a child, and other charges. (NBC)

Saltzman Institute of War and Peace Studies, the Columbia-Harvard China and the World Program, and the Weatherhead East Asian Institute will present Book Talk: Upstart: How China Became a Great Power. Oriana Skylar Mastro, author of the aforementioned book and professor at Stanford, will discuss her book, with the talk hosted by V. Page Fortona and moderated by Andrew J. Nathan.
