Visit Rome remotely with Jhumpa Lahiri and Alessandro Giammei at the Italian Academy tonight!

Happening off-Campus: A parking lot along the East River waterfront in Manhattan has been closed and will be turned into an outdoor gym. The parks department and the city’s Economic Development Corporation plan to reopen the space next spring as a public space with workout equipment and benches. This renovation will cost around $1.1 million, and the push to reclaim the space began several years ago, according to the EDC. The parks department Commissioner Iris Rodriguez-Rosa said that, “Expanding accessible and inclusive open spaces across the city is one of our top priorities.” (Gothamist)

Happening near Campus: Starting today, and lasting until Friday, November 21, the Broadway Mall Association begins its public art exhibition, Pablo Caviedes: The Unknown Way. The exhibition showcases 32 of Caviedes’s original works from his CRANIUM series which invites viewers to confront the fluidity of identity and question what it means to exist in an ever-changing world. Through this exhibition, BMA hopes to create visibility for emerging and established artists in Upper Manhattan. To learn more about the exhibition, click here.

Happening on Campus: Tonight, from 6 to 7:30 pm, Jhumpa Lahiri and Alessandro Giammei are hosting an event at the Italian Academy titled On Rome and Writing. During this discussion, Lahiri and Giammei will roam Rome remotely through five postcards. They will toss five coins in a virtual fountain and visit stairways, bridges, homes, piazzas, ruins, and starships. They are expected to be joined by the spirits of fellow Roman and adoptive ancestors. Registration is required. For more information, click here.
