Happening off-Campus: The government shutdown has become the longest in US history after the Senate failed to advance a House-passed continuing resolution to end the stalemate for the 14th time on Tuesday, November 4. The vote was 54-44, with no New Democrats crossing the aisle to advance the resolution. Lawmakers from both sides have hinted at the emerging contours of a deal to end the stalemate, as early as this week. Some Republicans feel that Democrats will be more willing to vote to reopen the government after the elections on November 4. (CBS News)
Happening near Campus: Zohran Kwame Mamdani wins the NYC mayor’s race after the highest NYC voting turnout in decades. His campaign was built on progressive ideas focused on affordability. Mamdani defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa. With this victory, Mamdani is set to become the city’s first Muslim mayor and one of the most liberal mayors New York City has seen in generations. Now, Mamdani must navigate the demands of NYC residents and deliver on his campaign promises of free child care, free city bus service, city-run grocery stores, and more. (AP News)
