It’s already the second week of November!

Happening off-campus: Two mothers from Cornwall have found new joy and excitement in music. Helen Davies (54),  rediscovered music after a long hiatus due to stage fright and other responsibilities, saying it has made her “feel like a teenager again” and restored something that was missing in her life. Lena Gillan, a business owner with a thirteen-year-old daughter joined a punk band called Piecework, determined to make time among her busy schedule for the things she enjoys. Both women emphasize the importance of finding passions outside of their children and work, and relate how music has, in a way, given them back their individual identities.  (BBC)

Happening near campus: Thousands will gather in Manhattan on Tuesday for the annual Veterans Day parade, which begins at 12:30 pm and marches up Fifth Avenue from East 25th to East 45th Streets. This year’s parade is a commemoration of 250 years of military service since the American Revolution and will feature more than 280 marching units, 20,000 marchers, and 25 floats. Led by  Medal of Honor recipient Clinton Romesha, Marine veteran Stephen Peck, and retired Navy Captain Sunita Williams, the parade will cause the closures of numerous streets. Additionally, city offices, schools, and services will be closed for the federal holiday. (Gothamist)

Happening on-campus: This Tuesday, November 11 from 12 to 1 pm, the Harriman institute is hosting a book talk on “Post-Soviet Graffiti” by Alexis Lerner. The talk, moderated by Timothy Frye, will discuss the book’s ethnographic study which examines how graffiti and street art function as political tools to circumvent censorship and express dissent in authoritarian post-Soviet and post-communist states. The event will take place in the Marshall D. Shulman Seminar Room (1219) in the International Affairs Building (420 W. 118th), and registration is required by 4 pm today. Rewatching: I am on season 7  of Grey’s Anatomy, and already dreading the Slexie departure that is about to occur. This is arguably one of the best stints of Grey’s (even if MAGIC is gone). I love MAJAC almost as much, though I’ll never be able to truly love April Kepner. The Karev, Mer, Cristina trio is better than ever, and Owen is just as insufferable as I remember! Season 7 is one of my favorites, and seeing Jackson Avery on my screen every episode is such a gift. Not to mention I finally made it through the Cristina quits being a surgeon era (terrible), and now I’m home free…until they get on a plane, that is. I can’t believe I’m already on season 7, but also can’t believe that that’s less than a third of the way through. Stay tuned for next week’s update!
