Chloe Kim, an American Olympian, speaks out in defense of American free skier Hunter Hess, and the nurses in NYC reach tentative deals on new contracts.
Happening off-Campus: Chloe Kim, a two-time Olympic gold medalist for snowboarding, weighed in on Donald Trump’s bashing of their friend, American free skier Hunter Hess, for having said he did not back the United States president’s heightened crackdown on immigrants. During a press conference, Kim said, “I think in moments like these, it is really important for us to unite and kind of stand up for one another for all that’s going on.” Kim’s parents are South Korean immigrants, and personally she has faced racism through her career for her Asian heritage. Her teammates Eileen Gu, Bee Kim, and Maddie Mastro also spoke out, calling for unity and celebrating diversity in the United States and at the Olympic Games. (AP News)
Happening near Campus: After almost a month on the picket line, nurses have reached tentative deals on new contracts to end their strikes at hospitals run by Mount Sinai and Montefiore, according to the New York State Nurses Association. The ongoing strike is the longest in city history, which started on January 12 when 15,000 nurses walked off the job. The nurses will first vote on whether to ratify the tentative agreements before they can go back to work. The new tentative contract agreements would run through 2028 and include salary boosts of 4% in March of this year and next year, as well as a 1% boost in January 2028 and a 3% boost that July.
