Thousands of New Yorkers face housing insecurity after federal aid expires.

Happening Off-Campus: Super Typhoon Sinlaku, the strongest tropical cyclone this year, hit the Northern Mariana Islands yesterday, with winds expected to intensify to 75 mph. The storm barreled over US territories Saipan and Tinian with destructive winds, torrential rain, and flash flooding. The weather system also hit Guam with heavy rain and tropical storm-force winds. The typhoon could cross the region as a Category 4 or 5-equivalent storm, raising concerns about prolonged outages and widespread damage. More than 1,000 residents seek shelter as emergency crews respond. No immediate fatalities have been recorded. (AP)

Happening Near Campus: More than 5,000 low-income households in New York City face a housing crisis as the pandemic-era federal voucher program runs out of funding, leaving tenants forced to secure new assistance before the May 1 deadline. The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), which oversees about 5,200 Emergency Housing Voucher recipients, is urging tenants to apply for alternative aid, including public housing. However, officials say placements are not guaranteed, and the agency is still assessing available units amid a waitlist that already exceeds 180,000 households. City officials are now attempting to fill the gap with limited resources, including vacant public housing units, many of which require repairs. Housing advocates warn the shortfall could lead to widespread evictions and homelessness, particularly for vulnerable groups such as domestic violence survivors, unless additional funding is secured. Happening On Campus: As a part of the New York History of Science Lecture Series, Kavita Sivaramakrishnan, Associate Professor of Sociomedical Sciences at Columbia University, will give a lecture on the debates about chronic diseases and questions of medical modernization in post-colonial India. This event will take place from 6 to 7:30 pm in 513 Fayerweather Hall. Registration is required.
