Happening in the World: A dead whale washed ashore in eastern Indonesia was found with a large lump of plastic in its stomach, with items including drinking cups and flip flops. The 9.5-meter sperm whale was found with 5.9 kilograms of plastic waste including 115 plastic cups, four plastic bottles, 25 plastic bags, 2 flip flops, a nylon sack, and more than 1000 pieces of miscellaneous plastic. It was not possible to determine if the plastic had caused the whale’s death.
Happening in the US: After an altercation in the parking lot on Monday, November 20th, gun violence broke out at the Mercy Hospital in Chicago. The shooter was the ex-fiancé of doctor Tamara O’Neal at the hospital, and in the altercation, four were found dead including the shooter, O’Neal, a resident pharmacist, and a police officer. The couple’s wedding date was set to be October 27th, but the date passed without the two walking down the aisle.
Happening in NYC: Governor Andrew Cuomo approves a new $2.50 yellow cab surcharge that will take place after New Year’s Day in January. The new surcharge will cost riders $5.80 just to sit inside a cab, and the surcharge was put in place as a “congestion fee”. Taxi drivers express concern that the new surcharge will scare off passengers and hurt their bottom line.
Happening on Campus: Miller Theatre produces a free concert tonight at 6pm by flutist Isabel Lepanto Gleicher. Gleicher is a core member of the new music sinfonietta Ensemble Échappé, founding member of SoundMind, and teaching artist with the New York Philharmonic.
