Happening in the World: In Indonesia, protestors gathered outside the parliament building in Jakarta to oppose a draft criminal code that would make consensual sex out of wedlock illegal as well as a new law that would weaken anti-corruption efforts. The crowd faced tear gas and clubs from the estimated 18,000 police sent to the parliament building in response to the demonstration. (CNN)

Happening in the US: Wally Conron, the inventor of the Labradoodle says creating the breed is his “life’s regret.” He blames himself not only for developing a “breed that is often plagued by mental or physical problems” but for engendering an age of designer dogs and “horrific puppy mills” (NYT)

Happening in New York: Amidst sexual harassment allegations, singer Plácido Domingo and the Metropolitan Opera cut ties the night before he was set to give his opening performance in the Met’s production of Verdi’s “Macbeth.” The most recent report of accusations includes allegations from eleven women (NYT).

Happening on Campus: In commemoration of 400 years since the arrival of Africans in Jamestown, VA in 1619, the Institute for Research in African American Studies is hosting an event, “1619 and Its Legacies: Symposium, Roundtable, Discussion, and Poetry Reading.” As the name suggests, there are lectures, discussions, and other related activities happening all day, including a poetry reading by Tongo Eisen-Martin (Columbia IRAAS).
