Happening in the World:  Two people were killed in a shooting near a synagogue in the eastern German town of Halle on Wednesday. Allegedly motivated by “extreme far-right and anti-Semitic views,” the shooter appeared to Livestream the event. German authorities say the suspect has been arrested  (CNN).

 
Happening in the US:  In Northern California, power shutoffs by Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) may affect up to 2.5 million people by the end of the week.  An “unprecedented swath of the state” may lose electricity or gas for as many as five to seven days after the country’s largest utility company cut power as a preventive measure against wildfires (Guardian).

 
Happening in New York: This Hispanic Heritage Month, El Barrio’s Artspace is holding El Festival del Libro (the festival of books). Dozens of local authors set up shop Wednesday morning to showcase their work to families in the area and celebrate bilingualism and embracing one’s culture. The festival continues this Sunday in East Harlem! (CBS)

 
Happening on Campus: Barnard Media Center’s Feminist Film Series presents “Shirkers,” a movie about the mystery surrounding “what should have been Singapore’s first big indie movie.” Follow it up with a Q&A with director and Columbia University alum, Sandi Tan!  (Barnard Media Center)

 
Book Recommendation: This summer I read “Normal People” by Sally Rooney and thoroughly enjoyed it! A very fast read for some funk, flirty, fresh, fall fun.
