Happening in the World: The highest court of Poland recently ruled that abortions in the case of fetal defects are unconstitutional. Poland is known to have some of the strictest abortion laws in Europe. As 98% of recorded abortions in Poland are due to fetal defects, Poland essentially mandated a total ban. Since this ruling, the only instance in which abortion is legal in cases of rape, incest, or when the mother’s life is in danger. This ruling will be incredibly detrimental and in many ways cruel, as some women must carry their child to term knowing it may be a stillbirth (CNN).
Happening in the US: The ACLU, along with other organizations, has sued the Trump Administration for separating immigrant children from their parents at the border. In an attempt to reconnect the children with their families, efforts have been made to contact the parents of these children. However, an updated count from Wednesday shows that the parents of 545 of these children have not been found, and therefore cannot be contacted. In the meantime, these children have been living in shelters or placed with sponsors (ABC News).
Happening in New York: Dr. William Spencer, a Long Island doctor and legislator, was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly trading oxycodone pills for sex. He was taken into custody after an undercover police officer contacted him under the guise of a prostitute. The sting was successful and authorities found two oxycodone pills in his possession. He is being charged with third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance and third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance (ABC 7).
Happening in the Community: Today marks President Bollinger’s annual Fun Run, a tradition that began in 2002. The run will take place virtually, so everyone is invited to participate from wherever you may be living at the moment. Additionally, to remove time zone barriers and make it more accessible, the 5k Fun Run will begin today at 10 am EST and continue until Monday 10/26 at 10 am EST. Dog Fact of the Week: It is so important to spay and neuter dogs! If a dog that is not spayed mates with a dog that is not neutered, they along with their offspring can have up to 67,000 puppies in just six years (MSPCA).
