We’re approaching the last stretch of the semester, and the Engineering Student Council knows it.

This week’s general body meeting began with reminders of upcoming events for the senior class. Many soon-to-be graduates have been waiting to partake in senior traditions since their first years at Columbia, and ESC’s Senior Class Council is trying to adapt them for a world of COVID.

40s on 40, an annual senior toast held on Low Steps 40 days before graduation, will be held virtually on March 20th at 11:50 PM. Later that weekend is the deadline to submit photos to the senior class’ Baby Photo Competition.

Though only seniors are nearing graduation, the semester is moving along for all students. Student Body President Estevan Mesa (‘22) participated in a joint meeting with CCSC and Vice President for Campus Services Scott Wright to discuss summer housing and dining and current plans for the fall semester.

Mesa noted that it seems unfair for housing to charge fees for students changing their housing plans when Columbia is just as likely to change the plans. He is pushing for housing to waive these fees at least until the university’s plans are fully decided.

Mesa also shared details about Days on Campus 2021. Days on Campus will likely be spread out over a month. Admitted students can choose to join a variety of virtual events over the span of weeks.

The Days on Campus organizers hope to keep things interactive by focusing on student to student interactions rather than one sided lectures. Some events will be in a panel format. Mesa will be creating a welcome video for admitted students for Days on Campus, and he hopes that other ESC members will participate in some of the events.

ESC is also continuing to prepare for the upcoming elections and the transition to a new council.
