Happening in the World: The Japanese coast guard is looking for a tour boat that went missing off the island of Hokkaido. The boat, Kazu 1, was on a sightseeing tour with 26 people on board, when it reported it was taking on water. Authorities have since lost contact with the boat but have confirmed 10 fatalities from the incident. (BBC)
Happening in the US: Gun deaths were the leading cause of death in American children in 2020, overtaking car crashes. More than 390 million guns are owned by civilians in the US. (BBC)
Happening in NYC: Unvaccinated NYPD officers have received ultimatums that give them 10 days to get vaccinated or be fired. More than 5,000 NYPD employees remained unvaccinated, making up 10% of the department’s 51,776 employees. (Gothamist)
Happening in our Community: Are you interested in mice? The Mouse Genetics Interest Group is so interested, they have been having bi-weekly talks about the newest in mouse genetics all semester. Tomorrow, Rossella Labella from the Kousteni Lab will be discussing compromised mitochondrial dynamics in MSCs in MDS to AML transformation at 12 pm on Zoom. Apparently mitochondria are also the powerhouse of mouse genetics?

@Anonymous Romans use to dunk mice by the tail in distilled spirits to knock them out and then light the spirits up to toast them as a tasty plague morsel.
