Happening in the World: Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin recently stated that Finland will decide whether to join Nato within weeks. This would be a militarily important decision amidst the war in Ukraine due to the 830-mile border shared between Russia and Finland. Marin’s comments come at the same time as a report to the Finnish parliament that predicted increased tensions between the countries upon Finland joining the alliance. Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson has also implied that Sweden will be deliberating on joining Nato. Both countries have insofar been militarily non-aligned. (BBC)

Happening in the US: On Wednesday, police in Grand Rapids, Michigan released video footage of the police killing of Patrick Lyoya, a 26-year-old Black man, during a traffic stop. The killing occurred last week, and activists in Grand Rapids say that it occurred after years of calls for changes in the local police force. Protestors marched in Grand Rapids on Wednesday after the video footage was released. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer indicated that the Michigan State Police will conduct an independent investigation of the shooting. (NYT)

Happening in NYC: The suspect accused of shooting 10 people on a subway train in Brooklyn was arrested in the East Village on Wednesday, ending a manhunt that lasted over a day. Frank James was taken into custody after police received a Crimestoppers tip that he was seen near a McDonald’s. Police have yet to identify a motive for the crime. (Gothamist)

Happening in Our Community: Tonight at the Miller Theatre at 6 pm, the Donald Keene Center will be hosting “An Evening with George Takei” where the Star Trek actor will discuss his six-decade acting career and using his voice for matters of social justice.
