Happening in the World: A coal mine explosion in northern Turkey killed at least 40 people and left dozens more trapped late Friday evening. Over 100 workers were in the mine—located in the Bartin province—at the time of the blast, which occurred over 1,000 feet underground. As of Saturday morning, Turkey’s government reports the rescue of 58 survivors from the mine so far, and emergency workers continue to sift through the area. The cause of the explosion is still unknown, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will visit the site on Saturday. (BBC)

Happening in the US: On Friday, California Governor Gavin Newsom blocked the parole of Patricia Krenwinkel, a former follower of the infamous Charles Manson. Krenwinkel was convicted for the murder of Sharon Tate and several others in 1969, and has been behind bars since. Now 72, Krenwinkel is currently the longest-serving inmate in California. She had previously been denied parole 14 times, until a parole board recommended her release this past May. Newsom blocked her release, claiming that Krenwinkel still poses a significant threat to public safety. (AP)
