Mona Lisa? More like Mauna Loa.

Happening in the World: Hawaii’s Mauna Loa, the world’s largest active volcano, erupted yesterday for the first time since 1984. Residents were placed on alert as the volcano’s alert level was upgraded to the highest classification of “warning” due to the risk of falling ash. Emergency officials say populated areas are unlikely to be impacted at this stage, though, and no evacuation orders have been issued. (BBC)

Happening in the US: Elon Musk feuded with Apple in a series of Tweets yesterday, claiming Apple halted most of its advertising on Twitter and is threatening to remove it from the app store. In his tweets, Musk accused Apple of “hating free speech in America,” as well as directly asking Apple’s CEO “What’s going on here @tim_cook?” Many companies are halting their spending on Twitter because of their concerns of Musk’s content moderation plans. As Apple was the top advertiser on Twitter in the first quarter of 2022 and at least half of Twitter’s top advertisers have pulled their advertising, Musk is left under pressure. (BBC)

Happening in NYC: This week, the MTA agency’s board is scheduled to vote on a slate of contracts for one billion dollars worth of accessibility improvements to subway and rail road stations. This would include the installation of 21 new elevators and 14 elevator replacements at stations across the city. These possible accessibility improvements follow a lawsuit filed by disability rights advocates as only a quarter of the city’s 472 subway stations are accessible to disabled riders. The lawsuit’s settlement agreed to make 95% of the system’s stations accessible by 2055. (Gothamist)
