Happening in the World: French President Emmanuel Macron paid a visit to New Orleans on Friday, celebrating Louisiana’s historical and cultural ties to France and launching initiatives to promote a continued relationship. Macron is the third French president to visit the state, following Charles de Gaulle in 1960 and Valery Giscard d’Estaing in 1976. During his visit, he met with native speakers of Louisiana’s French dialects to discuss plans for efforts to protect and revitalize French speaking in the state. (RFI)
Happening in the US: Alex Jones, infamous host of Infowars, has filed for bankruptcy after being ordered to pay $1.5 billion in lawsuits for his long-standing denial of the Sandy Hook school massacre. Jones was ordered to pay $965 million in compensatory damages and $473 million in punitive damages in proceedings earlier this year. Jones claims to be “broke” and unable to pay the damages, urging his viewers to buy items from his online store to keep the show afloat amid the financial turmoil. (AP)
Happening in NYC: Rats beware; NYC will soon have a new “rat czar” whose job is dedicated to the extermination of rats. The job listing asks for an interesting set of qualifications, including a “swashbuckling attitude” and a “killer instinct.” However, this new position, which will pay at least $120,000 per year, might meet some friction as the city undergoes budgetary challenges. Mayor Eric Adams is dedicated to taking a hard line against the rodents: “There’s nothing I hate more than rats,” he said. “Getting our city clean and ridding our streets of these filthy creatures are key to our recovery.” (Gothamist)
