Baseball

(32–18, 17–4 Ivy)

The Lions took the 2022 preseason rankings personal after being ranked behind Yale, coming back from a game down against Penn in the Ivy League Playoff Series to win the Ivy League Championship with a 2–1 series victory. The team went on to NCAA Regionals where they beat No. 14 Gonzaga twice only to lose the Blacksburg Regional Championship Game to No. 4 Virginia Tech. Columbia’s pitching crew averaged two earned runs less than their opponents and allowed over 50 fewer stolen bases. Hitting 64 homers and scoring 100 more runs than their opponents last year, this year’s first ranked team in the preseason polls is primed to start its season, battling with heavy hitters such as No. 19 Virginia, No. 20 Alabama, and Ivy rivals Penn. The Lions aim to test their strength early on, spending the weekend in the same state they lost the NCAA regionals in. If the team can maintain its offensive generation and continue to manage pitcher health, Columbia should expect another successful season.

Men’s Golf

(2nd Place in Ivy League)

With two of the best golfers in the Ivy League, it’s no surprise that Columbia ended its season with second place at the 2022 Ivy League Championships, finishing five strokes behind Yale after a subpar first day. Of those two golfers, fourth place finisher and Ivy League Player of the Year Nathan Han (CC ’24) holds the NCAA record for fewest strokes (60) in a collegiate round in common with just 16 other individuals. The other top golfer, DJ Francey (CC ’24) tied for second at the Ivy League Tournament. While the team has just four more meets before the beginning of the Ivy Championships, they continue to stay in good form, winning the Savannah Invitational by 11 strokes. The Lions will host their next meet in April.

Schedule:

February 18-19 at Savannah Intercollegiate – Savannah, GA – Final: 1st out of 15 teams

April 3 at Columbia Spring Invite – Springfield, PA

April 8-9 at Princeton Invitational – Princeton, NJ

April 15 at Roar-ee Invitational – Kingston, NY

April 22-24 at Ivy League Championships – Greenwich, CT

Women’s Golf

(2nd Place in Ivy League)

In opposition to the men’s squads poor first day at the Ivy League Championships, the women’s team slipped up on their final day of the tournament, letting Princeton sneak by and finishing only three strokes behind the Tigers in second. Similarly, the Lions also had two top-five finishers in graduate Jennifer Wang (CC ’22) and then-first-year Taylor Zeng (CC ’25). Led by underclassmen after Wang’s graduation, the team has taken their fall invites as experiencing-building opportunities. Hopefully, a top-five finish comes back onto the table for the Lions, as they have yet to see one since the 2022 Ivy League Championships last year. If they get back on track, consistency will be key for the Lions in their last four meets of the year.

Schedule:

February 11-13 at Columbia Classic – Melbourne, FL – Final: 7th out of 14 teams

March 17-19 at Low Country Intercollegiate – Hilton Head, SC

March 24-26 at Clemson Invitational – Sunset, SC

April 15 v. Harvard – TBD

April 21-23 at Ivy League Championships – Purchase, NY

Women’s Lacrosse

(2–13, 0–7 Ivy)

One could say it has been a rough past few years for the Lions, and they’d be right. Lacrosse hasn’t had a winning season since 2009 and even then went 1–6 in Ivy play. In fact, the Lions have won less than 10 of nearly 100 conference games since 2006, finishing last in the Ivy League in all but three of the last 15 seasons. However, the Lions started their season 2–0 with multiple first-years netting a majority of the team’s 31 goals, giving some much needed attacking strength to the team. If the first-years can keep up their work rate for the Lions, the team might have a chance this year, especially due to the team’s large senior class and their depth of experience.

April 29, 1 pm v. Yale – New York, NY

Women’s Rowing

(6th Place in Ivy League)

Though their 33 points in last year’s Ivy Championships only placed them in 6th, rowing had its best placing since 2017, showing the right kind of progress. However, the team’s only All-Ivy accolades came from two 2022 graduates, leaving the Lions without some key leadership. Rowing brought in 12 first-years for the 2022-2023 season, matching the number of seniors on the team and replacing the six-person 2022 graduating class.

Schedule:

Softball

(12–26, 8–13 Ivy)

The first season back from COVID-19 didn’t exactly go according to plan for the Lions last year. Despite being voted first in the 2022 Ivy preseason power rankings, softball went 8–13. After starting strong with two series wins against Penn and Brown, the Lions hit a Crimson roadblock as Harvard swept the team at home. The Lions would go on to win only one more series while opponents outhit and outran them. As a result, the team was tallied at fourth in the Ivy League in this year’s polls. Pitching will be the biggest, but not the only, struggle for softball. This year, the Lions already face over seven runs per game on average while their opponents have held them to under three. If the team can iron out its simple mistakes and capitalize while on base, its season will look much brighter. As it takes on its toughest opponents in its three opening tournaments, the UCF Knight’s Classic in Florida, the Gamecock Invitational in South Carolina, and the Long Beach Tournament in California, the team will face Big 10, Big 12, and SEC competitors.

Men’s Tennis

(15–9, 4–3 Ivy)

After winning the ECAC Championships, Men’s Tennis is primed for this season’s Ivy and non-conference competition, facing ranked after ranked opponent. After bringing down No. 33 Notre Dame at the NCAA Tournament last year, No. 3 Ohio State swept the Lions in the second round. 6–1 so far this season and the team has its eyes set on the NCAA Tournament. This team has what it takes to battle the best. However, one can only wait and see if the Lions will fold under the pressure on the nation’s grandest stage.

Women’s Tennis

(13–11, 3–4 Ivy)

Women’s Tennis is currently slated seventh in the Ivy League standings prior to Ivy play starting, on track to finish three places lower than it finished the 2022 season in. The Lions have won one of their three Ivy matches thus far, able to take down contenders for the ECAC Championship Yale. Despite not necessarily being the best team in the Ivy League, the team has proven that is should not be looked down upon and will continue to rally as underdogs throughout the season.

Outdoor Track and Field

(Men’s 6th, Women’s 8th)

The outcome of the Ivy Indoor Heptagonal Championships seem to be very representative of how the Lions will do this fall. With only three gold medals between the two teams, the Women’s Team finished in fourth and the Men’s ended the competition in sixth. Unless our runners gain superpowers from the sun as the outdoor season commences, the Lions are likely to once again finish as mid-table teams with a few athletes that excel.
