~200 of you responded, here’s how every major (that was given an entry) ranks!
Through the most sophisticated of methods (Google Forms), I, an expert in the field, polled over 200 students about the perceived hotness and queerness of their majors. I intentionally left the questions open-ended—participants could answer based on general vibes, the people, or anything else they deemed important in determining an answer. And before you ask, yes, I did do a linear regression (least-squares has my heart). Hotness and Queerness are moderately correlated with an R^2 of about .51.
The Highlights:
Hottest majors: Human Rights (CC), Art History (CC & Barnard), Race & Ethnicity (CC), and Economics & Social History (Barnard). Yup, that checks out.
Least hot majors: Electrical Engineering (SEAS), CompSci (CC & Barnard), and Biochem (CC). Only a bit surprised here.
Queerest majors: Human Rights (CC), Art History (CC), WGSS (CC & Barnard), and Visual Arts (CC). One again, yup.
Least queer majors: Economics (CC & Barnard), PoliSci (CC & Barnard), Biochem (CC), and Physics (CC). PoliSci was surprising to see here, perhaps due to its overwhelming popularity.
Largest outliers/deviations from the mean: Economics (CC & Barnard) and Music (CC). Always the Econ majors and musicians causing problems with the data. Always.
Closest points to the regression/smallest deviations: Biochemistry (CC & Barnard) and Philosophy (CC).
