A real succession is happening in the family that may have inspired the popular show of the same name.
Happening in the World: The public prosecutor in Tunisia detained political cartoonist Tawfiq Omrane for images that allegedly mocked the Prime Minister Kais Saied. Omrane was interrogated by officials without legal representation, according to his lawyer. Activists, journalists, and lawyers have since spoken against the detainment, with Saied denying that he is targeting freedoms and that he is a dictator. Omrane has since been released. (Reuters)
Happening in the US: The Fox and News Corporations announced that Rupert Murdoch is retiring from its boards. He has appointed his son, Lachlan Murdoch, to succeed him. The move alludes to the end of Murdoch’s career where he dominated the right-wing political and news landscape through his broadcasting corporation. His choice of successor indicates that the country’s future remains strongly tied to right-wing politics; his younger son, James Murdoch, has been more left-leaning and may have loosely criticized Fox’s connection to climate change denialism in the US. Happening in NYC: On Thursday, Mayor Eric Adams revealed his “City of Yes” plan meant to expand housing development in the city. The plan includes incentives for real estate developers to add more affordable housing units, allowing owners of single-family homes to build spare apartments on their property, and eliminating requirements for new apartments to reserve garage space. The details about the income-restricted housing are not available as of yet. (Gothamist)
