Insights with a Managing Director at Centerview

  • Tuesday, September 12, 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm, room TBD.
  • Columbia’s Finacial Investment Group (CFIG) will host Nolan Scaperotti, a Managing Director at Centerview Partners, to share his experience in the software and technology sectors.

Passport to Columbia

  • Thursday, September 14, 6:30 pm to 8 pm, Lerner Hall Auditorium. 
  • The University Life Events Council will kick off the fall semester with Passport to Columbia, an event to celebrate the international community on campus with games, food, activities, and giveaways.
  • Registration is recommended, but not required. The event is on a first-come, first-served basis.

  • Tuesday, September 12, 12 pm to 1:30 pm, International Affairs Building 1219.
  • Galina Timchenko is the co-founder, CEO, and publisher of Meduza, the largest remaining independent Russian news outlet which has been recently declared illegal by the Russian government. Timchenko will discuss the challenges of reporting inside Russia and of being a journalist when your nation is at war.

How Brazilian Civil Society responded to Threats against Democracy

  • With speakers from the Vladimir Herzog Institute and the Washington Brazil Office, this event will discuss how Brazilian civil society responded to the recent attacks against Brazilian democracy in the domestic and international spheres.

Book Talk: The Dragon Roars Back: Transformational Leaders and Dynamics of Chinese Foreign Policy

  • Wednesday, September 13, 12 pm to 1:30 pm, International Affairs Building 918, online.
  • Suisheng Zhao will talk about his new book The Dragon Roars Back: Transformational Leaders and Dynamics of Chinese Foreign Policy to trace the dramatic shifts in China’s foreign policy since its founding in 1949, focusing on President Xi Jinping’s power concentration and its implications for current Chinese foreign policy.

Investigating Mental Illness and One’s Own Family with Meg Kissinger

  • Thursday, September 14, 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm, Pulitzer Hall World Room.
  • In a conversation with award-winning investigative journalist Meg Kissinger on her new book While You Were Out: An Intimate Portrait of Mental Illness In An Era of Secrecy, this event will explore the techniques, challenges, and rewards of investigating mental illness and suicide. The event will include a reception and book signing, with the conversation taking place from 6 pm to 7 pm.

Abelardo de la Cruz de la Cruz – Community-Based Nahuatl Linguistic Revitalization in Chicontepec, Mexico

  • Friday, September 15, 6 pm to 7 pm, online.
  • Abelardo de la Cruz de la Cruz, Assistant Professor of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina, will speak about the Nahuatl language, the language of the Aztecs, and its relationship with identity, culture, and religion in his hometown of Chicontepec, Mexico.
