Happening in the World: Global banking giants are investing in companies that produce traditional Chinese medicines containing leopard and pangolin parts, a recent report has found. Both species are classed as threatened. The Environmental Investigation Authority identified sixty-two banks and financial institutions which are investing in three pharmaceutical groups making nine products containing leopard or pangolin. The companies include UK financial services giants such as HSBC, Prudential, Goldman Sachs, BlackRock and Deutsche Bank. (BBC)
Happening in the US: Local laws preventing travel for abortions are gaining momentum in Texas. Lubbock County, home to over 300,000 people, has become the largest county yet to enact such a ban. Mark Lee Dickson, an anti-abortion activist, has said these abortion trafficking ordinances are the “next stage for an abortion-free America.”(NYT)
Happening in NYC: FranCon is taking place this Thursday, Oct. 26 from 7-10pm at the Holiday Cocktail Lounge at 75 St. Mark’s Pl. The event celebrates all things Fran Lebowtiz. Participants dress up as Fran Lebowitz. Fans speculate that Lebowitz would never come to the event. They think that Lebowitz has better things to do. (Gothamist)
Happening in Our Community: Columbia University is hosting an online event called the Pomodoro Work Sessions. Students will have the opportunity to create structure, build community, and get their work done following the Pomodoro technique. This is a time management method where work is cut into twenty-five minute intervals. There will be a time to set goals and a reflection space the end. To register, follow the instructions here.
