Columbia offers a free shuttle service to ID-holders and affiliates, providing transportation through Morningside Heights, Harlem, Washington Heights, Fort Lee, and the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory.

The Columbia shuttles are confusing. It can be hard to understand the different shuttles, with their various routes and pickup times. Below, we’ve compiled a comprehensive guide for how to take the Columbia shuttles. There’s really no reason not to take them—they’re free, reliable, and usually pretty empty.

In order to take Columbia-affiliated shuttles, you’ll need any Columbia University ID. Community members with specific types of IDs can also take the shuttle; this information is listed in the Community Shuttle section. Guests of ID holders cannot take the shuttle unless they are under 18.

To track where shuttles are in real-time, download the Passio GO! app. Route maps and times are also listed on the web pages of each shuttle (linked below). However, the websites only state expected times of shuttle arrival for the Fall 2023 semester—Passio GO! is the most accurate way to track shuttle arrival. However, it’s sometimes useful to use both Passio GO! and the shuttle webpage to navigate a trip, as some trips are provided by Academy-branded buses, rather than by Columbia-branded shuttles. These buses are not trackable on Passio GO!, even though they accept Columbia IDs.

It’s also important to note that shuttles don’t stop at every stop on every run. Shuttles have “hard stops,” where the driver comes to a full stop every time, and “soft stops,” where the driver only stops if someone is waiting to board. Riders can ensure the shuttle will offboard at a soft stop by pulling the yellow cord attached to the windows.
