Happening in the World: It’s King Charles’s 75th birthday, and to celebrate, he is launching the “Coronation Food Project.” The project will be focused on “rescuing more surplus food, and distributing it to those who need it most,” says the birthday boy himself. According to the project, 14 million people in Britain face food insecurity, and there has been a 38% rise in individuals using food banks in the year to March 2023. (Reuters)
Happening in the US: Following Ohio voters’ decision to enshrine abortion rights this past week, Republican state lawmakers are attempting to strip judges of their power to interpret abortion laws. These four representatives are attempting to have the legislature make decisions about this amendment rather than the courts. The amendment passed by a margin of 57% to 43%. (AP)
Happening in NYC: The New York State Court of Appeals will meet tomorrow to hear arguments surrounding a case that could upend New York’s 26 congressional districts. This case is supported by the Democratic Conventional Campaign Committee. Redistricting could help Democrats pick up seats that are currently held by Republicans, specifically in Long Island and the Hudson Valley. Governor Kathy Hochul has filed a brief in support of her party’s lawsuit. (Gothamist)
