Happening in the World: On Thursday, February 8, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky fired Valerii Zaluzhnyi, the commander-in-chief of Ukraine’s armed forces. General Valerii Zaluzhnyi served as commander-in-chief since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine with recent approval ratings higher than even President Zelensky. General Zaluzhnyi was replaced by General Oleksandr Syrskyi in Thursday’s presidential decree, which cited a need for “renewal” within leadership as the reason for General Zaluzhnyi’s dismissal. Happening in the US: A special counsel’s report was released on Thursday evening discussing President Biden’s mishandling of classified documents that he took home in 2017 after serving as vice president to former president Obama. The investigation, led by Robert K. Hur decided not to file criminal charges against President Biden for the mishandling of the documents, in part due to an assumption of Biden’s declining memory. During investigations, President Biden could not remember key dates during his vice presidency, leading the report to call him a “well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.” But the president claims that “my memory is fine” despite confusing the president of Egypt with the president of Mexico when defending his action in Gaza just moments later. Happening in NYC: New York City Council is expecting to pass a program that ensures fast and free lock changes for domestic violence survivors throughout the city. Currently, domestic violence accounts for one of our city’s leading causes of homelessness. This program aims to aid survivors in maintaining their local network and support system without fear of abuse. Under the initiative, free lock changes wouldn’t require documentation of domestic violence or landlord approval for a new lock. (Gothamist)
