European Movie Marathon

  • Wednesday, February 21, 7 pm, location to be announced.
  • The Columbia European Society invites all movie-loving students to round one of two for their CES European Oscars event! In each round, three to four nominees/winners from the 2023 Oscars short films categories will be shown, and attendees will vote for the winner of each round. Afterwards, students can vote for the ultimate winner on their Instagram @columbiaeuropeansociety.

Lunar Gala: Year of the Dragon, A Cultural Kaleidoscope

  • Saturday, February 24, 7 to 10 pm, Roone Auditorium.
  • The Chinese Students Club is hosting a Lunar Gala to celebrate the Lunar New Year. The event will feature food, student performances, and a fashion show.

  • Listen to the Sheila Abdus-Salaam ’74 Memorial Lecture, where 82nd Attorney General of the United States Eric H. Holder will talk with Barnard President Laura Rosenbury about a variety of legal topics, including civil rights, civic engagement, and the importance of the rule of law.

Detlef Mertins Lecture on the Histories of Modernity

  • Listen to Dwight Carey deliver the Detlef Mertins Lecture on the History of Modernity, an annual lecture in honor of the life of Detlef Mertins. Carey is an assistant professor in the Department of Art and the History of Art at Amherst College whose work covers architecture, slavery, and colonialism in the Atlantic and Indian Ocean worlds.

Youth Shaping Rights: A Dialogue with the 2024 Obama Foundation Scholars on Human Rights Leadership

  • Wednesday, February 21, 12:10 to 1:10 pm, Jerome Greene Hall, Room 107.
  • Hosted by the Columbia Law School Human Rights Institute, the Columbia Law Students Human Rights Association, and the Columbia Society of International Law, this event features a discussion with two Obama Foundation Scholars who will share their opinions on the impact of youth-led groups in driving positive change in human rights.

Asylum Seekers: A Story of Civil and Human Rights

  • Thursday, February 22, 6 to 7:30 pm, Pulitzer Hall, World Room.
  • Sponsored by the Ira A. Lipman Center for Journalism and Civil and Human Rights, this event offers attendees the chance to listen to a presentation and conversation about how journalists can better cover the topic of civil and human rights of asylum seekers. Speakers include Arelis R. Hernández, Elora Mukherjee, Max Siegelbaum, Sarah Stillman, and Robe Imbriano.
