Happening in the World: Hong Kong has passed a new security law that targets crimes like external interference and insurrection. Article 23, as it is known, includes severe penalties, such as life sentences. Critics are concerned about the level of influence the Chinese government has in reducing civil liberties in Hong Kong, and that this bill will exacerbate free speech problems. (BBC)

Happening in the US: The EPA has announced a ban on the only kind of asbestos still allowed. Asbestos has been banned in over 50 countries and is estimated to cause 40,000 deaths in the US each year. Exposure to the substance through construction material in buildings can lead to mesothelioma, lung cancer, and other kinds of cancer. The US was the last developed Western country to create this ban. (BBC)

Happening in NYC: CUNY claims that proposed budget cuts by Mayor Adams will negatively impact the programs they offer. In January, Adams proposed a $109 billion budget that involved major cuts to the CUNY system, libraries, sanitation, and other services. The suggested budget allocates only 1.15% to CUNY.
