The 14th Amendment is on the mind of the Supreme Court and students this week as discussions are underway if Trump should be allowed to run for office again. Editor’s warning: death and violence.

Happening in the World: Armed gangs in Haiti free 4,000 inmates from the main prison in Haiti’s capital Port-au-Prince. The massive jailbreak occurred late on Saturday after several shootings that left four police officers dead and five injured. Following the attack, the doors of the prison remain open and officers are nowhere to be found. However, according to a volunteer prison worker, 99 prisoners, including former Colombian soldiers involved in President Moïse’s murder, have remained in their cells in fear of being killed. (BBC)

Happening in the US: The Supreme Court announced on Sunday that a decision will be made on Monday, likely in regards to former President Donald J. Trump’s eligibility for Colorado’s primary ballot and to run in the general election. The ruling taking place is in regards to the December, 2023 Colorado Supreme Court ruling as the Court decided that under Section 3 of the 14th amendment that Trump is not allowed to hold office again, as the law states that people who swore to support the Constitution and then acted in an uprising against the government are unable to hold office. As a result of this, on January 3, Trump went to the Supreme Court to hear his appeal and based on the questioning that took place, it is believed he will come out victorious. This would be the first time since Bush v. Gore that the Supreme Court has taken on a direct role in a presidential election. (NYT)
