Hidden treasure maps are sooo back.

Happening in the World: Engineers working on the Corsewall Lighthouse in southwest Scotland recently discovered a 132-year-old message in a bottle hidden in the wall. The note, dated September 4, 1892, was penned by former engineers and lighthouse keepers who had installed a new Fresnel lens and lantern at the lighthouse. The discovery was especially relevant as the current team was working on the lens that the note’s authors had installed. The Corsewall Lighthouse is one of more than 200 still operated and maintained by the Northern Lighthouse Board, which employs engineers, technicians and lighthouse keepers across Scotland. (NYT)

Happening in the US: If Senator Marco Rubio becomes Secretary of State in the second Trump administration, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis will be tasked with selecting a replacement for Rubio’s Senate seat. Some Republican lawmakers have endorsed Lara Trump, the president-elect’s daughter-in-law, to fill the position. While Lara Trump has not yet spoken with DeSantis about the possibility, she has expressed openness to the idea, citing her alignment with Trump’s “America-first” values. (NYT)

Happening in NYC: Eli Zabar, the renowned owner of Manhattan’s E.A.T. cafe, celebrated the 50th anniversary of his Upper East Side landmark with a special event hosted in collaboration with Substack. The gathering brought together writers from various fields, including politics, food, and culture. Zabar, now 81, reminisced about the early days of E.A.T., which once served as a hub for artists and writers in a then-underdeveloped neighborhood. “Lots of these writers are new names to me,” Zabar said, “This crowd here tonight reminds me of the same people I had back when I started.” (NYT)

Happening in Our Community: Poet, essayist, and author of “Memory of Memory,” Maria Stepanova, will join Mark Lipovetsky to discuss her recent work “Focus,” prose that follows the story of an author’s unscheduled stop in a small European town. The event, hosted by the Harriman Institute, will be held in the International Affairs Building at 2 pm.
