We won football!

Highlights:

The Columbia Lions clinched their first Ivy League Football Championship in 63 years with a 17-9 victory over Cornell, sharing the title with Dartmouth and Harvard. The win was a testament to Columbia’s balanced attack, led by Joey Giorgi’s (CC ’25) career-high 165 rushing yards and Caleb Sanchez’s (CC ’28) pivotal passing plays, including a 73-yard connection. Columbia’s defense excelled, forcing two critical interceptions, including one by Hayden McDonald (CC ’25) that halted Cornell’s late-game comeback attempt. The team celebrated their historic achievement with fans and alumni after Yale’s victory confirmed their championship status while retaining the Empire State Bowl Trophy.

Columbia men’s tennis junior Michael Zheng (CC ’26) won the NCAA singles title, defeating Michigan State’s Ozan Baris 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, becoming Columbia’s first modern-era NCAA singles champion. Zheng’s victory marks the first Ivy League men’s singles champion since 1922 and Columbia’s first since Robert LeRoy in the early 1900s. After a dominant first set, Zheng faced resistance as Baris claimed the second set, forcing a decisive third where Zheng regained control with early breaks to secure the title. Reflecting on the win, Zheng expressed relief and pride, especially after falling short in the spring NCAA Championships earlier this year. His victory is a historic achievement for both himself and Columbia’s tennis program. Also, word on the street is he doesn’t get any toppings on his Diana bowl.
